Brendan reveals his cup approach

Posted on: Wed 12 Aug 2009
Royals boss Brendan Rodgers believes tonight's match against Burton Albion will give him the perfect chance to take a look at the depth within his squad.

"I'm really looking forward to the game as it gives the opportunity to players who have been fantastic over the course of the summer," the boss commented.

The Royals are expected to make a number of changes from the side that drew 0-0 with Forest, with the likes of Chris Armstrong, David Mooney, James Harper and Marek Matejovsky hoping to make a return to first team action, while Matt Mills could also be set to make his Royals debut following his move from Doncaster last week.

And with eight Royals unavailable due to international call-ups, Academy stars such as Nicholas Bignall, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Ben Hamer could also be involved and the Royals boss believes the Carling Cup presents him with the perfect opportunity to look at his squad.

"I want to be strong in the league, and I want to be strong in the FA Cup, as I think it gives us the chance to build momentum. But the Carling Cup gives us the possibility to adapt and change the team to give younger players the opportunity.

"We will make a full team of changes, bar one or two, as it gives me the chance to rest some players but it also gives an opportunity for some players to go out and show me what they can do on the first team stage.

"Obviously, we want to win and we will be strong but I am using the game as an opportunity to look at one or two others players."

Tickets for this evening's game are on general sale now to all Member Card holders, priced £12 adults and £7 concessions. Telephone 0844 249 1871, use the online ticketing service or visit in person.
