New contract for young 'keeper

Posted on: Fri 14 Aug 2009
Goalkeeper Alex McCarthy has signed a new contract with the Royals, keeping him at Madejski Stadium until the summer of 2011.

19-year-old Alex is a product of the Reading Academy, and is currently first choice 'keeper for Yeovil Town as he enjoys a loan spell at Huish Park.

Alex has been part of the England u19s setup, and gained his first Football League experience last season when on loan at Aldershot Town.

Director Of Football Nick Hammond said, "We are delighted Alex has committed to us with this new contract because he is a talented young goalkeeper with terrific potential.

"He is continuing his development out on loan at the moment and he is a player we have high hopes for."

Alex added, "This is massive for me. I really enjoy being here and I am very happy to sign this new extension.

"I'm getting more League experience at Yeovil, which is great, and I would like to come back here next season and try to push for the number one spot.

"There are a lot of young lads in the team here at Reading at the moment, it's a good club for young players to be at."
