Brendan: What an occasion

Posted on: Sat 15 Aug 2009

Brendan Rodgers cannot wait for this Saturday's game with Newcastle United, kick off 5:20pm.

The manager takes his team to St James's Park for his first away match as Reading boss, and there can be no bigger occasion for his young side.

He said, "This is a great game to go and play in. You want to play in big stadia and in a big environment.

"There will also be big emotion, it's the first game since Sir Bobby Robson passed away and he was a great man. He was a great role model for British coaches, he travelled around the world, Spain, Portugal, Holland and we respect that, he is a legend in Newcastle.

"For us, we have to draw a positive from the atmosphere, and once that whistle goes we obviously want to win the game.

"Playing at Newcastle is a great occasion and we have no fear going there. It's great to have the chance to play them early because it's a good marker for us in this division.

"Every game in this league is tough and this is no different. We will go there with a positive attitude and look for a positive result.

"This game is part of our learning. Whether you're young or old, going to St James's Park can be a tough game but it is part of the learning. Our young lads have experience, they're not 17 and straight out of the Academy. Look at someone like Simon Church, he's a full international.

"Ours is a young team but they still have to be good. 50% of last week's squad had been in the Academy but they weren't in just because of that. You can see they can compete, as long as they are surrounded with experience."

Brendan will likely stick with a very similar team to the one that faced Nottm Forest last week, and he said, "We'll have a close look at that but it depends if we can get anyone else in before the game. The players were very good last week and with a bit of luck might have won the game."

There are no new injury worries for the Royals and all returned from international duty with a clean bill of health. 'Keeper Steve Harper has been passed fit for Newcastle, but Nicky Butt and Danny Guthrie are out, while new signing Danny Simpson could play.

The Royals have sold roughly 1,100 tickets, and any supporters travelling north may like to know that the A404(M) is closed this weekend.

The game is live on Sky Sports.
