Long rues marginal decisions

Posted on: Mon 17 Aug 2009
Shane Long was left to rue a few key decisions that went against us in Saturday's 3-0 defeat to Newcastle.

It ended as a comfortable win for the home side, but it could well have been different had a few key moments fallen in our favour. First of all Alan Smith could have been sent off for two late challenges in a minute, then Long was very harshly pulled back for the softest of fouls when in on goal down the right moments later.

Finally a penalty decision went against Shane for handball in the late stages, and he said, "Sometimes you don't get ones at the big grounds!

"When I was in down the right, Coloccini went to hit me with the shoulder, I got free and somehow it was a free kick for them. I think the ref knows now it wasn't a free but it's too late now. That was at 0-0, so was Smith's second tackle but the game slipped away after that.

"For the penalty, it's why they don't put strikers in the box! I don't think it was a pen, I missed my header so it was half and half but we were never going to get that one.

He continued, "In the first half we showed what we can do, we took the game to them and passed the ball around.

"The first thing we said was 'remember this feeling and don't have it again this season.' We know we're a good side and we'll look forward to playing Newcastle at our place.

"The good thing is that we've got a game at Swansea on Tuesday to put it behind us."
