Brendan that result must have been frustrating, having taken the lead in the first half?Well I didn't think 3-1 was a fair reflection of the game, to be honest, and I said that to the players afterwards. We got our goal, first half we were very good, right up until 43 minutes. We had deserved to score and we wanted to go in 1-0 at half time, in control. We let them back into it with a poor goal and at 1-1 it's still in the balance. We started the second half a wee bit slowly but came into it and the next goal changes it slightly. It was unfortunate for Adam, he's a top class 'keeper and he's been outstanding since I came here. When 'keepers make mistakes there's nobody behind them, but nobody is blaming him, sometimes it happens. I still always felt we were in the game, then the terrific goal at the end as we're chasing the game...the 3-1 flatters them but there are lots of positives to take.
I say that because this was a good measure for us, Sheffield United will be right up there. They are strong, they can play, they can shut out the game but for a big, big part of the match we were right in it. If we can get one or two players in, we will only get better. The result was disappointing but I am happy with a lot of things from today. We controlled much of the first half. There are 42 games left, plenty of time to go, nothing is won in September.
It's been a difficult run of games considering we are a new team and a new group. It's been tough but we won't lie down, we will fight. I saw a lot of development today, shame about the scoreline but we will improve.
It was hard for you up front again.
We had a great work ethic and the intensity of the front guys was there. I have always said the players here are great, there's a big transition going on and the young players need support. From day one I've said we need to bring in up to four players, we've got a couple in so far and we've more work to do on that. They need that support and that creativity up front, we know that, we're not hiding from it.
Transfers are hard but that's part of the game. We must make sure there are players coming here, but the right players. We've got a week or so to go, the club know our intentions and we will work together to do that.
We've been bidding in the market and that is between the clubs now, we are looking to do that this week.
Could you do with more experience?Absolutely. There is room for a couple of players along those lines and that has always been my intention. We've got a group of young players, you can't rely on them for a whole season. We're making changes, dipping some of the young ones in and out because it's a long hard slog. It's nice at this stage of the year when the sun shines but at times experience will tell. We need to get to work and get a couple more in. We will do that.
There is a big transition going on now.The club ended a terrific cycle that was five years long. At the beginning of that cycle it wasn't the same as when it finished. There had to be growth and development, this is the same, but when you end a very good cycle there has to be another one starting. For me and the supporters too, who have been fantastic by the way, there is an understanding that this is a young group. We're at the beginnings of what we are trying to, and once we get the experience and add one or two, there's a lot of hope. We just have to get over this stage now and then develop.
I'm very, very optimistic. It hurts when you lose, and the supporters want to walk away having seen us win. There will be many, many good days here, we just need to go through a bit of pain in the club in terms of players going in and out. When we do, we'll be alright. Like I said, the guys have given everything, every single day they work hard. We'll reflect on the game, their confidence won't drop and we will fight in every game, I am positive for the future.
