Rodgers: Only one team in it

Posted on: Sat 12 Sep 2009
Boss Brendan Rodgers was pleased with how his team performed in our 0-0 home draw with Doncaster Rovers, but left a touch frustrated that we were unable to turn our possession into a winning goal.

Brendan's men were much the better team, but Neil Sullivan pulled off some excellent saves for Rovers, who failed to register a shot on target in the second half.

Rodgers said afterwards, "I'm pleased with the performance we put in, but being greedy I wanted to win.

"I felt only one team was going to win it in the second half.

"In terms of workrate and mentality the team was very strong, you could see the togetherness and that will only get stronger. A clean sheet was important, but we never quite got the finishing moments on good periods of play.

"Doncaster are a very good passing side, you will see that over the season and they beat Cardiff in their last game. I felt it was a real good test for us and apart from the result I thought we passed the test.

"It was a game in which we had to do a lot tactically; Doncaster changed their shape three times in the game so it was a good test for the players in that respect. They started 4-3-3, we got on top and they went to a diamond, then through the second half they went 3-5-2. You have to adapt and think in that aspect and I was very pleased because you can't just run about then, spaces open up all over the place.

"Defensively we were strong against a team that move well, they're not a standard Championship team. The referee wasn't great, which was frustrating.

"I felt that we had a period in the first half when we were bright, our movement and passing were good, and we carried that into the second half. We started to get a wee bit more anxious and Sullivan made a terrific save after Grzegorz's great strike."

Brendan in continuing to see development in his group, and just wants to turn that into a home victory. "Some patterns of what we're doing in training are coming into games and that is important. I can see growth every day.

"The group are hard-working and very disappointed not to have collected three points. Defensively we are strong, we've brought in attacking players and that will come.

"Cardiff will be a different game again, it will be a standard 4-4-2 and we'll go into it with big confidence."
