Live updates
7pm - Reading's team is in and there are two changes. Grzegorz Rasiak and Marek Matejovsky both start and the Royals look likely to play a 4-4-2 diamond. Jimmy Kebe and the injured Brynjar Gunnarsson miss out. Ivar Ingimarsson is named on the bench, his first involvement at first team level since January.
7:20pm - Reading 107's Ben Rice predicts a win for the Royals. In the background, Ivar Ingimarsson receives loud applause as he comes out to warm up. It's a chilly evening in Berkshire, the cold has descended quickly.
7.56pm - The two teams have walked out and Cardiff stopper David Marshall is sporting an all pink number! Very garish! City are in yellow and the Royals in regulation blue and white hoops.
7.59pm - Royals skipper Ivar Ingimarsson is given a great reception as he is announced on the substitutes bench. The City fans are making a bit of noise themselves too though.
1 min - The very first minute brings Reading a glorious chance. Howard slips it right to Hunt in space on the edge of the area. he touches it into the box and lines up to shoot, but Marshall saves well low to his right to push it away and City hack it clear before Sigurdsson can latch onto the loose ball.
7 mins - A great exchange of passes in midfield sees Sigurdsson break into a bit of space. Hunt is to his right in space but he opts to go for goal himself and lashes over from 22 yards out.
16 mins - Rasiak wins a free kick on the right and Howard curls it into the box. It's cleared twice before Sigurdsson drives over the bar from the edge of the box.
18 mins - Chopra causing problems down the left. He cuts inside Cummings and drills an early low cross towards Bothroyd on the edge of the area. He shoots but Federici is well behind it.
27 mins - O'Dea brings it out of defence with a purposeful drive forward and it falls to Howard, who floats a cross towards Rasiak on the right side of the box. He wins his header and powers it goalwards from 15 yards out, but it drifts wide and the offside flag is raised regardless.
32 mins - Cardiff substitution. Adam Matthews is forced to retire injured and Paul Quinn replaces him.
34 mins - Sigurdsson scurries towards the box but Gerrard brings him down. He needs treatment but as soon as he gets up he is booked.
35 mins - Sigurdsson takes the free kick and it deflects off the wall for a corner. Howard and Matejovsky sty a clever corner but are foiled by the offside flag.
38 mins - Chopra tries a one two and is in ahead of Pearce here. He pulls the trrigger from 12 yards out but it skids across the face of goal and wide. That was a good chance for the visitors.
40 mins - Hunt jumps for an aerial ball and it is headed away but only down to Howard. He tries a speculative right footed shot from distance but his ankle is clipped and it bobbles harmlessly wide. No free kick to Howard's disgust.
45 mins - Two minutes of added time to be played. The referee trips and falls over to the crowd's hilarity.
HALF TIME
47 mins - Reading have started brightly again. Howard collects the ball from Bertrand and takes a great first touch to open up the shooting opportunity. He lets fly from 22 yards and Marshall has to fly full stretch to his left to tip it round the post.
48 mins - Matejovsky now has a go from distance and again Marshall is equal to it, pushing it around his right post and behind for another corner.
51 mins - Howard picks up the pieces in midfield again and turns to bustle forward. He delays his pass and toes it left to Rasiak who passes a low cross into Hunt who can't quite check his run and convert from close range.
56 mins - Rasiak has it on the right and he cuts inside. Opting not to pass it across the edge of the area, he shoots across his body with his left foot, but Marshall is down well to save.
57 mins - Royals sub: Simon Church replaces Noel Hunt up front.
58 mins - Completely against the run of play Cardiff score. A cross from the left is swung into the box and Bertrand stmbles. It falls to Burke at the far post who smashes it high inside the right post and past Federici.
60 mins - Burke has a golden chance to double the visitors' lead, but somehow he treads on the ball at the far post with the goal gaping. How did he miss that?
68 mins - It's fallen a bit flat again. The Royals were dominating and threatening to break through when Burke struck, but it's important the Reading players' heads don't drop.
73 mins - Marshall has to stretch over players to touch an inswinging corner away from danger and he needs treatment after that.
75 mins - From a simple aerial ball forward Church is set free and he takes a good first touch but from a tightish angle it dribbles agonisingly wide of the far post. So frustrating.
76 mins - RED CARD! In the middle of the field a rash challenge from Stephen McPhail is punished by an immediate red card for the City man. Karacan needs treatment but should be ok to carry on.
79 mins - Cardiff and Reading sub: Chopra takes a time-wasting age to come off and be replaced by Gavin Rae. Jimmy Kebe comes on for Karacan for the home side too.
87 mins - Cardiff sub: Solomon Taiwo repalced Ledley. Reading swing in a late corner but Alex Pearce can only power his header just over the crossbar. That could have been the equaliser.
89 mins - Kebe shows some fancy footwork to chip a good-looking cross into the box, but great defending sees the ball headed behind before Rasiak can arrive.
90(+1) mins - Sigurdsson delivers a good cross into the box from the left and O'Dea has stayed up there. He tries to glance a header goalwards but it spoons up and floats over the bar and onto the roof of the net.
90(+3) mins - O'Dea nods down Pearce's hoof forward and it drops for Sigurdsson who volleys a ball that bobbles up at goal. Marshall gathers it comfortably though.
90(+4) mins - Kebe wins a corner and Federici comes up. Surely it couldn't happen again? It ricochets off a Cardiff man and bounces up for Federici on the edge of the box. He tries a spectacular overhead and connects well, but Marshall reads it and holds on high to his left. That would have been a stunning finale!
FULL TIME - Reading the better side, but can't score the goal. Cardiff are more clinical and take the three points. More frustration for the home fans.
