7pm - The teams are in and Brendan Rodgers has made two changes to the side that drew with Watford last weekend. Brynjar Gunnarsson replaces Gylfi Sigurdsson - who drops to the bench. And Grzegorz Rasiak can only get a substitute's place despite scoring last weekend - Simon Church is his replacement.
Marek Matejovsky returns to the 18, as does Kalifa Cisse, but Jay Tabb misses out and Alex Pearce is also absent.
Preston North End start with Neil Mellor and Chris Brown up front in a 4-4-2 formation. Ross Wallace forced the own goal when Reading visited Deepdale last season - he starts on the left wing.
7.32pm - The Royals will be wearing all orange tonight as Preston line up in their white home colours.
7.38pm - A very loyal band of away supporters are huddled together in the stand to my left. It was bright sunshine when we left for Deepdale earlier and now were are sat under the shelter of the stand with some very dark clouds and misty rain falling on the pitch.
7.44pm - The two teams emerge from the tunnel in the far corner of the pitch from the press seats and the main stand at Deepdale. Ivar Ingimarsson completes the toss and we're ready to start.
4 mins - The first chance falls to Chris Sedgwick who watches a Karacan headed clearance drop 16 yards out and then plants a shot just over the bar.
10 mins - McAnuff wanders in from the left and gets past his man well. He's inside the box and shoulder to shoulder with Nolan, and manages to sidefoot a shot at goal which Lonergan saves well with his legs.
18 mins - Good work from Gunnarsson in the middle sees him feed Kebe on the right. He fizzes in a tasty cross into the box and it skips past everyone and Nolan has to clear before McAnuff taps in at the far post. A great cross from Kebe.
19 mins - A cross is chipped back from the byline on the left and Howard chests it under control and then volleys at goal, but it flies just over the crossbar. The home fans are starting to sense Reading's domination.
22 mins - Howard delivers a cross earned by Cummings and Ingimarsson deftly flicks it goalwards at the near post. Lonergan has to scramble it off his line to deny the Icelander a cheeky opener.
27 mins - Howard tries his luck from 20 yards out but it' takes a deflection over the crossbar. Howard delivers the corner and O'Dea is penalised for climbing at the far post.
29 mins - Reading in complete command. Great suff from the Royals. Kebe gets in behind his man down the right and crosses dangerously but no-one can get a touch to it to put it away. The corner is cleared and Karacan smashes it over from 30 yards out.
31 mins - Kebe has Nolan for pace here and he gets into the box from the right. He overruns it with his final touch though and Preston can clear. This is wonderful football from Reading.
33 mins - GOAL! Gunnarsson harries in midfield and slides in to win possession from Chaplow. The ball breaks for Church in space and he scurries forward. He calmly passes it wide of Lonergan and scores from 15 yards out.
42 mins - GOAL! A long clearance from a Preston corner is nodded back into Reading's half. Howard plays it forward quickly again and Kebe is in space this time. There's no catching him and he drives into the box, creates an angle and passes it under Lonergan for 2-0. Nothing more than the Royals deserve.
44 mins - Karacan crosses the ball into the box looking for Church. He heads it just over unchallenged but he's flagged offside anyway.
HALF TIME - Reading have been excellent. Preston are being outplayed. But we've been here before and it's important the same Royals side come out for the second half.
North End have made a change for the second half. Richard Chaplow has been replaced by Darren Carter at the break.
50 mins - Preston have begun the half much better, passing it around and generally looking a lot more organised. Brown has the ball in the net after bringing a long ball forward down and passing inside the left post - but the offside flag went up a long time ago.
55 mins - Incisive passing from Reading's midfield sees Howard play a reverse pass into Church. A defender spots it but concedes possession to Church who toes it back to McAnuff. Bodies surround him but he finds room to shoot and Lonergan has to be alert low to his right to save.
59 mins - Kebe leads a break away from a North End attack and he cuts inside from the left. He can't find the space to shoot so tees up McAnuff who drives low at goal from 22 yards. Lonergan saves well low.
60 mins - Kebe again attacks down the right and he fizzes a low cross into the middle. McAnuff is there only yards out and he sidefoots it on target but Lonergan saves with a reaction stop - that should have been a third. The home fans come alove and are making real noise now, responding to their side's superb display so far.
67 mins - Wallace lofts a high cross into the Royals box and Federici has to back track and arch his back to claw it from underneath his crossbar.
68 mins - Preston sub: Sedgwick is replaced by Jon Parkin, who will certainly add to Preston's presence up front.
68 mins - Reading sub: McAnuff is replaced by Matt Mills. Reading trying to hold what they have here?
69 mins - Wallace, from nothing, unleashes a fearsome strike from 30 yards that Federici brilliantly tips onto his crossbar. That packed a punch and was flying into the top left corner. It goes behind for a corner which Reading clear.
71 mins - Mills has been brought in to compensate for the introduction of Parkin, and he comes across to dispossess the North End striker after a good turn provided him with a fleeting shooting opportunity.
74 mins - Federici can't get through a crowd to come for a corner and it falls to Mellor at the far post who arrows a shot towards the near post. Federici is down very well to turn it wide. Reading are holding on here a bit.
76 mins - Mellor tries a curling effort from distance that is sailing worrying close to goal. Federici dives at full stretch but he can't get anything on it. It clatters against the stanchion and flies away from the danger zone.
78 mins - Wallace tries again from distance and again he beats Federici from 25 yards but again it strikes the left post.
79 mins - Reading sub: Karacan is off and Cisse is on. Reading are up against it here and need to get out of their own penalty area here.
81 mins - Parkin on the turn fires a good right-footed effort at goal and Federici can only watch as it skids across the face of his goal and skims just wide of the far post.
84 mins - GOAL! Parkin and Mills wrestle each other to the ground at the far post when a flaoted free kick is aimed towards him. The referee points to the penalty spot and Parkin converts. This is still up for grabs.
87 mins - Reading sub: Rasiak is on for Church
90 mins - Desperate stuff here. Four minutes of added time are to be played and Preston are getting a chance every minute it seems. Shot after shot, cross after cross is bobbling around the Royals box.
FULL TIME - Reading have hung on. It was incredible drama in the final five minutes and somehow the Royals have clung to all three points. That took character!
