Lampard praises Royals style

Posted on: Wed 25 Nov 2009
Football consultant Frank Lampard says that the entire club deserved victory over Blackpool on Saturday, and has echoed Brendan Rodgers' praise for the squad's character during recent weeks.

Goals from Gylfi Sigurdsson and Grzegorz Rasiak pushed the Royals further up the table, though it was the exciting football on display that pleased many inside the Madejski.

"I was pleased for the players, the supporters and the coaching staff as well. Obviously they've all worked very hard at it. After a great result, we need to put two or three games together now," he said.

"We spoke in the week about moving the ball very quickly; we try to play a lot of football, which a lot of teams in this league don't. We just keep the boys believing in what they're doing. It's very easy to just pump the ball into the box and go for it, but Brendan's stood by his guns and we've worked on a lot of one and two touch, moving the ball quickly, I think it paid off against Blackpool. Some of the passing was brilliant.

"I've always said to the lads don't hide. It's easy to talk a good game and then as soon as you go on the pitch you go missing. You move away all of a sudden so you don't get the ball, and it goes wrong, but I've been very pleased with their attitude."

The opening home league win of the season came just days before Reading's boss celebrated the one year anniversary of his first foray into management, and Lampard was quick to praise the Northern Irishman's work - whilst also expressing satisfaction with his own role in the side.

"Brendan's done a lot of good things, he believes in the way he wants to play and he's got my full backing. I throw in bits here and there and we work well together. We have respect for each other, I watched him coach at Chelsea and I knew what a good coach he was.

"For me personally my time here has gone quickly, I enjoy it and I make sure I do my stuff. I'm always here, I take the youth team on Tuesday mornings and try and give something back to them. I think they enjoy it, I work them hard and they're a bit knackered the next day but it won't do them any harm! That's part of my job here. It's not just to work with the first team it's to look underneath at what's coming through."
