Boss praises 'exceptional' display

Posted on: Sat 05 Dec 2009
Royals boss Brendan Rodgers was rightly delighted with his team's performance after a fully-deserved 2-0 win at Sheffield Wednesday.

Reading rammed home their advantage in the second half, impressive duo Grzegorz Rasiak and Kalifa Cisse on target; Jobi McAnuff the creator on both occasions.

Rodgers told our online TV station Reading FC Player, "In the first half we were very strong defensively and then just needed that little bit more in the final third. I just said to the players to keep the structure and free yourself up going forward, and they did that exceptionally well. We scored two good goals and could have had more.

"Two things were very important today. First of all, we managed the game very well. Especially when you have young players in the team the game can become emotional, but I want us to be tactical and we did that. We were much better at that than last week and the got a pleasing result from that.

"Secondly, we had a clean sheet. We were very strong as a team, and that allowed us to get back on track and keep this little run going. Apart from 30 minutes last week, we're in good form."

Rodgers' to changes to his starting XI were to bring in Rasiak and Cisse, and they both repaid his faith by finding the back of the net. He said, "That's always nice! Grzegorz will always get you goals at this level, and he was very good, even though I know he was disappointed he didn't score a couple more! If you get the ball in the box to him he'll score, no question.

"Kalifa has been outstanding, he's not played but has worked well and worked hard. If you get your chance you have to take it and he did just that."

McAnuff was at his incisive best, and his pass for Cisse's second goal rounded off a wonderful team move also involving Marek Matejovsky and sub Brynjar Gunnarsson. "That's why I brought him here, he creates and scores goals. When Churchy went off he went to the left and didn't get as much joy, but when we moved him to the right his quality was outstanding. He's a matchwinner and has hit terrific form here - but there's more to come."

Finally, Simon Church will be assessed after picking up a back injury in the first half. "His back is sore, we'll have a full assessment in the morning and he was struggling to run."
