Griffin pleased with good form

Posted on: Thu 04 Feb 2010

Andy Griffin has performed very well since signing on loan from Stoke earlier in the month, and the on-loan defender is pleased to be helping the team climb up the table.

Griffin was delighted the team picked up all three points at home to Barnsley last weekend, and he played a key role in Shane Long's winner, chipping in a nice cross that led to the Irishman's close-range finish in the first half.

He said, "It was a huge win, you don't want to distance yourself from getting out of the bottom three - so it was a massive win, clean sheet, 1-0 victory, it was a perfect scoreline, so hopefully we can put a little run together now.

"It's important that the gap doesn't build between us and the team above us. We are a confident team, even though we are where we are, we're creating chances and I thought we played very well.

"Against Sheffield United it let us down in both boxes but we created chances and the same at Forest. The 'keeper in both those games got man of the match, so it's just silly things that we have to eradicate at the opposite end."

When asked about his own performance he said, "You like to set yourself high standards, I did OK but there were certain parts of my game where I thought I could have done a bit better - but if I'm trying to make excuses then I've not played regular football for a year, so that's my excuse!

"It feels funny waking up and knowing that you're going to play, which is a great feeling, I've gone too long for not playing and all of a sudden I've got games coming thick and fast. The whole of February goes Saturday - Tuesday - Saturday - Tuesday but I'm sure I can cope with that."

Lastly, Griffin has been pleased and impressed with the number of striking options available to manager Brian McDermott, commenting, "We've got plenty of options up front, they are young strikers and with youth I think you get enthusiasm and energy in bundles.

"I thought Longy was fantastic against Darren Moore - he's up for a battle, he's tough, he's strong, he's exceptionally quick and all over the park you have youth - but you also need a little bit of experience. The manager has brought that in and hopefully that will see us climbing up the table."
