Brian wants more FA Cup glory

Posted on: Sat 13 Feb 2010

Manager Brian McDermott is determined to continue his team's winning form and excellent FA Cup run when we take on West Bromwich Albion this Saturday, kick off 3pm.

We host the Baggies in a battle for a place in the last eight of this year's competition, and we have not progressed to that stage since our semi-final run way back in 1927.

Brian has masterminded victories over Premier League sides Liverpool and Burnley in previous rounds, and he must now prepare for the top team in the Coca-Cola Championship when taking on Albion at 3pm on Saturday.

He said, "We're really looking forward to it. We should have a good crowd, a special atmosphere and a special day.

"It's been a long time since we got to the late stages of the FA Cup and we'll try to win the game. West Brom will also try to win the game and I think it will be really good for the fans because of that.

"The FA Cup is a great competition and everyone has memories of it. We were talking about Bob Stokoe, Alan Sunderland, fantastic memories. Now we have our own memories, beating Liverpool at Anfield with Shane Long scoring, then beating Burnley and we want more of it.

"West Brom are a good side and I'm sure they'll be in the Premiership next season. They're top of the table and they are the boss team in the league. They have good players and the manager has done a good job there.

"It's a good game for us because it's at home. We're pleased to have our fans behind us. I don't like to talk about giant killings because we are Reading, we are a big club. We were in the Premiership not long ago, and if anyone comes to our place we want them to have to play well. My only concern is if we don't perform, especially in front of our own fans. If we perform, we're in with a good shout."

Brian is pleased to have Shane Long in such impressive goalscoring form at the moment, and has asked him to keep performing with the aid of our supporters. "He's now got to keep doing it. He's got the momentum and we want it from now until the end of the season. Top players do it every week, and Shane has to maintain that.

"I am sure he will, his fitness levels are really good and the crowd are getting behind him. People don't realise how important that is, it's giving him a real lift and he feels like the number one striker."

Tickets for this weekend's game are on general sale now to all Member Card holders. Telephone 0844 249 1871, use the online ticketing service or visit in person.
