Live updates

1.05pm The teams are in and Reading make two changes from the side that destroyed Sheffield Wednesday last weekend. Shane Long returns from suspension to replace Grzegorz Rasiak up front, while Matt Mills has recovered from a knock to the head suffered in the Fifth Round win at West Brom to fill the space vacated by the cup-tied Zurab Khizanishvili.

Aston Villa don't name Gabriel Agbonlahor amongst their squad - he misses out through illness. So Emile Heskey starts alongside John Carew up front. Steve Sidwell only makes the bench on his return to Madejski Stadium. Besides that change up front, Martin O'Neill names the same side that started in the Carling Cup Final at Wembley last week.

1.14pm The atmosphere is really building now as kick-off is only half an hour away. Can Reading upset the odds for a fourth time in this competition this season and make it to Wembley!

1.47pm We're underway and what an FA Cup atmosphere! Only a few spare seats dotted about and both sets of fans are in good voice. A place at Wembley at stake - let's get it on!

1.48pm Bright start from the Royals! Jay Tabb's clearance is sliced backwards by James Collins and Shane Long is almost through. He's sliced down by the Villa defender and it's a free-kick to McDermott's men. Somehow Collins escapes a booking.

1.49pm Kebe does well to intercept a ball in midfield and dash forward. He tries to feed Long in the area but Friedel is alert and dives bravely to win the ball at the Irishman's feet.

1.53pm Well-contested start from the home side. Shane Long has twice won 50/50 headers against the towering Villa centre halves and Kebe looks bright on the right.

1.54pm The ball is in the net for McDermott's men, but it won't count! Ingimarsson heads back a Howard cross and Mills mis-times his shot badly. However it falls to Jimmy Kebe who lashes home - but the whistle has already gone for a shove in the box.

1.57pm Kebe races away again! His confidence is sky high as he drives at the Vila back-line, but again his attempted through ball sees Friedel beat Long to it.

2.00pm Plenty of pressing here from Reading. They are pinning the away side in their own half for now - though unsurprisingly O'Neill's charges look dangerous on the break.

2.03pm A lovely whipped cross from Ashley Young puts hearts in mouths for the Royals, but it's a good interception by Ingimarsson and Federici snaffles the rebound.

2.05pm Petrov finds space on the left hand side and rasps a shot towards goal, but it's a yard or so over.

2.06pm Wonderful corner from Sigurdsson, dropping right on the far post - Mills is only inches away from heading towards goal.

2.08pm Another great cross from the right, this time from James Milner. Kebe does brilliantly to track back and head away from danger.

2.09pm More conventional Kebe skill there! He twists and turns away from danger in the middle before sprinting forward. Dunne hauls him down and picks up a booking for his troubles.

2.10pm Neat set piece from Howard, Mills beats Friedel to it and there's panic in the box, but just booted away for a corner. From the resulting set-piece a Tabb volley is deflected narrowly over.

2.11pm GOAL!!!!! The Royals are ahead!!! Howard's out-swinging corner is headed across goal again by Mills, but this time Shane Long is on hand to nod past Friedel. That's deserved!

2.13pm Villa have it in the net, but again the linesman's flag is up. Carew sweeps home a free-kick but is ruled offside.

2.15pm They aren't sitting on this lead! A flowing move results in Sigurdsson driving from 12 yards out, but a Villa foot gets in the way and it rebounds away.

2.19pm More extremely dangerous centres fly into the box from the Villans, this time Milner whips it in. It's well left by Griffin and runs out for a goal-kick.

2.22pm Jay Tabb has been a terrier in midfield so far. All over the park winning headers, tackles and spreading the ball about with pace.

2.24pm Ashley Young picks up a needless booking for dissent. That's two Villans on a caution now.

2.30pm GOAL!!! The Royals double their lead! Jimmy Pele, sorry Kebe, races clear on the right and brilliantly clips back a centre to Long. The Irish international keeps his cool to roll in a brace!!

HALF TIME

2.48pm We're back underway here. If there's one thing this cup run has taught us, it's that anything could happen in the next 45 minutes.

2.40pm GOAL! Worst possible start for the Royals. A neat move down the left eventually works across the area to Ashley Young, who lashes home from six yards.

2.41pm Good reaction from Bertrand as he races 60-yards down the left flank before being hauled down by Collins. The Welsh centre back is booked.

2.54pm GOAL! Heartbreak. Villa are level, wonderful wing play from Downing as he cuts on to his left before swinging a ball to the far post. Carew leaps well to head home.

2.59pm GOAL! We did say anything could happen, and unfortunately it has. John Carew gets on the end of a neat centre and deftly flicks home from 12 yards out. It was a great finish.

3.10pm Heskey races powerfully through on goal, but it's great work by Federici in a one on one situation to dive at the England international's feet and prevent a sure fire fourth.

3.12pm Good play by Tabb and Kebe as the former races into the box, winning a corner after sneaking round the back of the Villa backline.

3.13pm So close to an equaliser! Ingimarsson heads Sigurdsson's corner towards goal and it's cleared off the line.

3.16pm The Royals are coming back into it - another corner comes in and drops to Kebe, who smashes in a shot from six yards that his somehow blocked by a combination of bodies.

3.26pm Yet again the Villans survive by the skin of their teeth. A header from Rasiak flies across Friedel's goal, and the big American somehow claws it out.

2.28pm Villa have sat back now and are looking to catch us on the break. They almost do so with James Milner but Griffin tracks back well and covers.

2.31 Lovely attempted Rasiak backheel on the edge of the box, if Long had read it he could well have been through on goal. Great thinking by the big Pole.

2.33pm GOAL! Ingimarsson brings down John Carew in the box and the towering Norwegian picks himself up to fire home from the spot.

FULL TIME - Heartbreak on the day but we can be so proud of our boys in the cup this season. What a great run it's been. At half time it looked like Wembley beckoned but Villa showed in the second 45 just what a good side they are. A final scoreline of 4-2 was a touch harsh and we never stopped for 90 minutes. Now it's on to Derby and let's not forget we're top of the Championship form table!

The Royals are rightly being applauded off by the supporters after giving their all in this great competition.
