Griffin - 'I'm enjoying my football'

Posted on: Fri 12 Mar 2010

Andy Griffin says he is enjoying his football once more, after settling into life as a first team player with Reading.

The full back joined on loan from Stoke back in January and clocked up his 13th Royals appearance in the 4-1 win over Derby on Wednesday, and says both he and the rest of the squad are full of confidence.

"I'm enjoying my football, I'm fit again and it's just a case of playing with a smile on your face and doing well," he said.

"We'll certainly go into the Bristol City game with confidence and belief and a confidence that we can get goals. We seem to be getting goals all over the pitch, so we're in confident mood at the moment but it's going to be a tough game and we can't afford to take anything from granted.

The midweek win over the Rams will be remembered for a bizarre sequence of events that saw both County keepers leave the pitch before half time, leaving midfielder Robbie Savage in goal and Brian McDermott's team trying to break down a wall of retreating visiting players.

"I suppose they had a bit of a bad luck with Stevie Bywater going off and then their sub keeper getting sent off but I think we were always in control and I think we ran out deserved winners.

"It was quite strange seeing Robbie Savage in goal, it was a little bit comical but that's what they had to do which was disappointing from their point of view but all that matters is that Reading football club push up the league.

"They still had four defenders, four midfielders and then one up front so it was difficult and perhaps sometimes when you have too much time on the ball that's not a good thing but, like I said, we were always in control and on another night we could have scored a few more."

Finally the former Newcastle man responded jokingly when quizzed on recent chants from Royals fans, who have been belting out 'Griffin for England!' after recent sparkling displays from the 31-year-old.

"If I'm totally honest I don't think I've got a chance for the World Cup! But I must be doing something right in a Reading shirt so it's all good."
