Praise for Mills' 'class' shirt gesture

Posted on: Mon 22 Mar 2010
Matt Mills went out of his way to give his shirt to the Reading supporters after our 1-1 draw at Middlesbrough, and the gesture drew praise from boss Brian McDermott, who described it as 'a class act.'

Mills was loudly applauded from the moment he stepped off the team bus outside the ground, when he went out on the pitch to warm up, as he entered the fray just before kick off and also at the end of the 90 minutes.

He repaid the supporters' faith by jumping an advertising hoarding and climbing a flight of stairs to the upper tier where our 375 fans were situated behind the goal, and threw his shirt into the crowd.

Manager McDermott said, "I thought it was a class thing for him to do, it was a class act and I am sure the supporters appreciated that.

"He feels he owes the supporters and you could see the response today, I was so pleased."

Matt ended the game with the captain's armband after Ivar Ingimarsson went off injured.

A full video interview with Matt is online now on Reading FC Player, including footage of his reception as he arrived at the ground. We also have an interview with Brian McDermott and video highlights from the Riverside - sign up for a 14-day free trial today!
