Gylfi agrees new Royals contract

Posted on: Tue 01 Jun 2010

Reading Football Club are very pleased to announce that Player of the Season and top goalscorer Gylfi Sigurdsson has agreed to sign a new three-year contract at Madejski Stadium.

The influential 20-year-old had not made a league appearance for the Royals before 2009/10, but ended the campaign as the club's leading marksman with 20 strikes in all competitions.

As recently as last November he signed a new contract, and the club have moved swiftly to protect one of their key players and extend his terms by a further 12 months.

"This is a massive signing for Reading Football Club. Gylfi is a fantastic player who obviously has a great career ahead of him and it is made all the more satisfying by the fact that his success came after he progressed through our flourishing academy," said Chairman Sir John Madejski.

"I hope this contract underpins our determination to progress in the forthcoming season and that it inspires fans to keep up their fantastic support."

Director of Football Nick Hammond told readingfc.co.uk, "I'm absolutely delighted Gylfi has signed a new contract. For a player of such a young age, in his first full season at Reading, to make the impact that he did was quite astonishing.

"For us to have secured his signature for another three years is excellent news because he is a top player with the ability and mentality to play at the very highest level."

Sigurdsson is equally delighted to put pen to paper, saying, "This is very good news for me. I am playing every week and I am happy to stay for at least another year.

"I signed a new contract just a few months ago, and having been offered a new contract again now, I'd be stupid to go elsewhere.

"I've finally got myself into the team, I wouldn't want to be anywhere else and not play or just sit on the bench. I want to play every Saturday and Reading is the right place for me to do that.

"With the way things have gone recently, everybody is feeling very positive. How we finished the season was incredible and if we can take that into next season it will be a good place to be."

Sigurdsson, who is currently in Iceland hoping to receive his first senior international cap this weekend, was one of a host of Academy graduates who had a massive influence on first team affairs last season.

"His performance throughout last season, along with the consistent levels of performance achieved by a number of our Academy graduates in 2009/10, can only provide the other young players at this club with a major incentive to succeed," Hammond added.

"They are proof that if you are good enough to progress you will be given that chance at Reading Football Club."

Royals boss Brian McDermott was also pleased to secure the Icelander's signature.

"I'm delighted that Gylfi has decided to add another year to his contact. For him to score the amount of goals that he did this season was absolutely fantastic," he said.

"I know the type of person that he is and he certainly won't be resting on his laurels. If anything he'll want to better his performances next season and help the club get to where we want to be."
