McDermott thrilled with Wolves win

Posted on: Thu 29 Jul 2010

Royals boss Brian McDermott was able to revel in an excellent performance and a good result while he mingled with old friends on Tuesday evening.

The Royals deservedly beat top flight Wolves 2-1 at Madejski Stadium and the manager was very happy with another very positive display from his men.

"There was a good shape to us. We did the basics well and I was pleased - it was a really good performance," he told our online TV station Reading FC Player

"There were some really good interchanges between the players - some really good partnerships building up...Jimmy and Griff, Marcus and Jobi.

"Shane held the ball up really well up front and Gylfi was excellent. I thought Millsy and Pearcey at the back looked really strong too - against probably one of the best strikers in Europe in Kevin Doyle."

The Royals took the lead through a familiar route - a Gylfi Sigurdsson penalty. But the second came from substitute Michail Antonio - his first goal in the Royals shirt.

"He's come from nowhere in the last two years, but he had a loan spell at Southampton last year and he did really well," McDermott said of the former Tooting & Mitcham winger.

"I think he's another one who will excite the crowd this season. I don't think Noel was too happy though! Michail took it off him and put it in the net," the manager joked.

"Noel is really starting to look like the player we know he is. He's impatient - he wants to play. I understand that, but I have to look after him.

"I want to make sure he's completely ready. He came off the bench and did well. He'll look forward to his training and his games and he'll get his opportunity."

It was a who's who of former Royal greats down in the tunnel after the game - Kevin Doyle played the first half for Wolves, Stephen Hunt was part of the travelling party, Greg Halford came off the bench for Mick McCarthy's men...and Ibrahima Sonko was also here to watch.

"It was great to see them - Kevin and Stephen here with Wolves, but Marcus couldn't come.

"I had a good chat with Kevin after the game - and I don't need to speak about him much more. What he's done in the game and what he's done for Reading speaks for itself - and the same goes for Stephen Hunt and Marcus.

"It was nice to see Sonks as well. I know he's going to Portsmouth to get some games this season so we wish him well...apart from when we play against him!

"It's important to look back at great sides. Everyone can name that team and remember how well they did. All Championship sides have to try to emulate that team because that was the best side ever in the Championship.

"Now my aim for the season is to put on some more football that people want to turn up and see every week.

"I want to see 23,000 odd in the stands as many times as possible this season. And that's not impossible - that has to be our goal for the season."
