Michail Antonio came off the bench and scored what proved to be the winning goal against Wolves on Tuesday evening, and the young winger was delighted to find the back of the net.
The 20-year-old joined the Royals in late 2008 from non-League side Tooting & Mitcham, and furthered his development with a very successful loan spell at Southampton last season, scoring an excellent goal at Wembley as they won the Johnstone's Paint Trophy.
After developing well at St Mary's and gaining valuable experience, he is now a part of Brian McDermott's first team squad and continued his progress with a neat finish in the second half against the Premier League side.
He also showed some good attacking play and raw pace, while the Londoner also has a prodigious long throw.
He is an amiable, jovial character and said afterwards, "It's my first goal for the club and I just wish to get many more. Noel Hunt flicked it on and I just poked it in. I've been here two years, I've played four games now in pre-season, showed the gaffer I can score goals and it's gone well so far. All I can do is train, try hard."
Antonio replaced Jimmy Kebe on the right flank, and the Malian had a superb game, with Antonio commenting with a smile, "He had their left back on toast basically, he couldn't touch him! He was quality."
Michail [pronounced Michael] now prepares to return to St Mary's this weekend when we take on Alan Pardew's men in a friendly encounter. "I spoke to some of the players, Jason Puncheon, Joseph Mills and Oscar Gobern, it's going to be a good game against a good club. We can't go there just expecting to win, Southampton are going to turn up! They're not a League One team and I think they'll go up this season."
