Clockwatch: Royals 2-1 Foxes

Posted on: Tue 31 Aug 2010

Leicester 1 (Dyer 51)
Reading 2 (Sigurdsson 22, Mills 86)

Reading picked up a superb win over Leicester City on Saturday night, as a heroic performance from captain Matt Mills helped bag three points live in front of the Sky Sports cameras.

Gylfi Sigurdsson had brilliantly given McDermott's men the lead in the first half, only for an impressive individual effort from Lloyd Dyer to level proceedings.

It seemed at one stage as if Mills would have to leave the pitch with a nasty ankle injury - but the skipper played through the pain and was rewarded as he powered home a unstoppable header to win it with four minutes remaining.

Reading (4-2-3-1): Federici; Gunnarsson (Antonio 45), Cummings, Mills (c), Pearce; Karacan (Church 62), Howard; Kebe, McAnuff, Sigurdsson; Long
Subs: Hamer, Davies, Taylor, Antonio, Robson-Kanu, Church, Hunt

Leicester (4-4-2): Logan; Berner, Lamey, Teixeira, Hobbs; Oakley (c) (King 64), Wellens, N'Guessan (Moussa 82), Dyer; Gallagher (Fryatt 56), Howard
Subs: Ikeme, Neilson, Morrison, Kennedy, Moussa, Fryatt
Booked: Howard

Live updates
4:30pm - Reading's team is in. Two changes from last week's draw with Forest, and both full backs have been changed; Brynjar Gunnarsson in at right back and Shaun Cummings at left back.

4:50pm - Further details on Leicester's team - they start 4-4-2, handing a debut to full back Michael Lamey. Goalkeeper Conrad Logan makes his first League start in the absence of the injured Chris Weale.

4.58pm - The small section of the Walkers Stadium set aside for Royals fans is starting to fill up - they've got great memories of this place, a dramatic win last year and of course the fabled promotion celebrations in 2006.

5.01pm - This is Shaun Cummings' first start for Reading since December - when he played in Brendan Rodgers last game in charge, a 1-1 draw with Scunthorpe. Let's hope he grabs his chance.

5,18pm - There's the distinctive sound of the Leicester City bugle and the two teams are entering the arena for battle. The Royals are in their black change strip - the ground is by no means full.

5.21pm - We're ready to get underway and the Royals kick off - attacking the goal housing the Foxes supporters for the first period.

5.22pm - Early half chance for the home side as Lloyd Dyer cracks in a shot from the right hand side, but Cummings does well to come across and block.

5.25pm - An early knock for Matt Mills and he's limping to the touchline. He should be ok to continue, but this injury curse just keeps following Reading - especially at the back.

5.27pm - Brian McDermott will be a joy for the Sky Sports cameras today - as ever he's highly animated, pacing and patrolling his technical area.

5.31pm - Good move by the Royals but they're just denied by some brave defending. Gunnarsson's dink down the line finds Sigurdsson, who hammered a cross into the box on the bounce. Howard meets it with a half volley but he's blocked well by Teixeira.

5.34pm - Another swift attacking move by the visitors. Sigurdsson sweeps the ball out wide to Kebe, who dances inside before winning a corner. Howard's set-piece is just about cleared away.

5.37pm - Jem Karacan is the latest to be in the wars. He finds a flailing arm when bravely going in for a header - and the television cameras are already showing a huge lump appearing on our Turkish midfielder's cheek. He's bravely going to play on, that's a real shiner.

5.40pm - Safe hands from Federici as N'Guessan cracks in a low shot from the left side of the area. That was never slipping from Adam's grasp.

5.42pm - That's a chance! Matt Mills, fresh off the back of a brace in midweek, leaps to meet a well dinked Brian Howard set-piece. He finds space to nod towards goal but times his jump wrong, placing the ball wide of the target.

5.44pm - GOAL! The Royals are in front, and it's magical by Sigurdsson. He initially plucks the ball out the sky before feeding Long on the edge of the area, and although the Irish international is fouled the referee plays good advantage as Kebe pounces on the loose ball. He feeds the late run of Gylfi - and our ice cool Icelander shows typical composure to dink the ball over Logan. Lovely goal.

5.49pm - There's only one set of fans you can here raising their voices now, and they're sporting blue and white hoops. Frustration creeping in for the Foxes faithful.

5.52pm - McDermott's men are looking super confident when they're on the attacking foot now - with Kebe and Sigurdsson especially striking fear into the City backline.

5.57pm - Great defensive cohesion from the Royals backline. They all step up in unison as Leicester take a free-kick - leaving three Foxes players stranded offside.

6.02pm - Shaun Cummings shows his ability in the other half of the field. After a good interception he bounds into the City half, before a neat exchance with McAnuff and a cheeky piece of skill from the former Chelsea man wins a free-kick for the Royals.

6.03pm - Shane Long heads a Howard free-kick towards goal, but it's just about gathered by Logan.

6.05pm - Jobi is the latest to torment the Leiceste defenders - jinking inside before firing a shot into the arms of Logan.

6.07pm - Four minutes of time added on at the end of the first period. Not sure where that came from.

6.08pm - That also looked like a moment of danger. Another wonderful piece of play from Sigurdsson, as he whips a deadly ball in from the right, where Shane Long rises but can't quite head towards goal.

6.09pm - Well this injury crisis is getting ridiculous. Now Gunnarsson has limped off, to be replaced by Michail Antonio. McAnuff switches to right back with Antonio on the left.

HALF TIME

6.25pm - The teams are out again and we're just about ready to get underway. Reading will be attacking the end housing their own supporters, or at least in their general direction.

6.27pm - A lovely turn and cross by Longy wins a corner for Reading. Sigurdsson's resulting set-piece is dangerously dropped in and around the penalty spot - but well dealt with in the end.

6.31pm - Clever reverse passes by Kebe and Cummings eventually release Long down the line. He shapes to turn inside before clipping onto his right and firing a low shot - but it's easily saved.

6.32pm - GOAL! Leicester are back in it thanks to a fine individual strike. Lloyd Dyer weaves past two challenges before slamming home a left footed daisy cutter from distance. No chance for Fedders.

6.36pm - Howard takes a snap shop from the edge of the box - but it flies high over the bar.

6.39pm - Matt Mills still looks to be struggling with a knock slightly. With Gunnarsson off the pitch there really are limited options for Brian McDermott should Millsy be forced to come off. No more natural defenders around.

6.40pm - Gylfi heads towards goal after a delicate ball in from Howard - but it is narrowly over the bar.

6.42pm - Simon Church is ready to come on for the Royals. He replaces Jem Karacan - good show of attacking intent that.

6.43pm - Immediately Long and Church link up - before sending Antonio into space. The young winger blazes an effort over the bar.

6.49pm - McAnuff gets a chance to use the ball from right back, bringing play forward a good 40 yards as he dashes down the right though eventually runs out of room.

6.51pm - Good persistance from Sigurdsson slips Kebe into the area, the Malian has a great chance to test Logan but is denied by a great point blank stop from the stand in keeper.

6.54pm - Some Leicester pressure here as the Royals have to deal with a series of corners - but they defend well and see it out.

6.57pm - That's not good. Under little pressure Matt Mills crumbles awkwardly on his troublesome ankle - and looks in pain. He's receieving treatment from Luke Anthony.

6.58pm - Fair play to Millsy. Somehow he's battling on and has winced his way back into the fray.

7.02pm - Magnificent run by Kebe, he glides past two challenges on a 30 yard run - though eventually runs out of steam near the City area and is challenged. A little bit more luck and he was in.

7.03pm - What an outstanding save by Federici. Lloyd Dyer looks to have bagged a brace as he hooks a shot towards goal, but 'Fedders' pulls a wonderful fingertip save out his locker to deny the winger.

7.06pm!! GOAL!!! Millsy's done it again!!! Captain fantastic!!! He powers home a header from Brian Howard's corner. Superb header - third goal in a week from the skipper!

7.07pm - My word! Matt Mills has saved the day in his own half this time, throwing himself at a goalbound shot to block on the line. Bear in mind he's doing all this on a dodgy ankle!

7.11pm - Four minutes of time added on. Come on boys - it's been such a brave performance let's hold on to it.

7.13pm - How did that stay out, this is torture. Leicester are laying seige to the Reading goal, but another last ditch clearance blcoks the shot. Andy King also has the ball in the net but it's disallowed for a foul on Mills.
