Hunt: 'We're more than capable'

Posted on: Fri 03 Sep 2010
Noel Hunt believes that the current Royals players are more than capable of filling in for the departure of Gylfi Sigurdsson, after the Icelandic international made a big money move to Hoffenheim on Tuesday.

The popular striker has also moved to praise the new additions to Brian McDermott's squad, after Zurab Khizanishvili and Ian Harte bolstered the ranks.

"Gylfi is a wonder kid and deserves his move - it's a great deal for him and a great deal for the club, neither party could say no but we wish him all the best.

"Now it's down to the players to fill the gap, whatever the gaffer does we need to fill the gap he's left and we have the players to do it.

"We've got more than enough capability in the squad to get where we want to go. Someone said to me the other day it's not one man that makes the team and that's true. We need our strikers to score - Gylfi was the man last year and it'll be down to us this year, we have got goals in the team.

"We've got a couple more faces in too and that's been good. Ian Harte is a great guy, a good pro and he'll be a big addition to the squad. I remember watching as a kid when he played for Ireland and for us it's massive.

"Zurab is also a great player and a great guy. Last year he was fantastic and a joy to have around the place. He brings more experience to the team and it's great to have players like that around us."

The international break has left Hogwood Park slightly quieter than usual as a number of players depart to serve their countries - and whilst Noel is looking forward to seeing Ireland in action, he has vowed to use the time wisely as he battles back to match fitness.

"Hopefully we'll get off to a good start and I hope Shane (Long) get's a run out. It's my main aim to get match fitness and I've been running hard for the past few days.

"It's been hard but good, I've known myself I need it and that it's going to be a while until I get back to match fitness - so this little week that we have is just a window of opportunity to get back to do as much as I can as hard as I can."
