So unlucky for Welsh trio

Posted on: Wed 08 Sep 2010
There was misfortune and disappointment for the Royals' young Welsh trio on Tuesday evening as the Wales under 21 side were knocked out of the UEFA Championship by the narrowest of margins.

Brian Flynn's side needed to avoid defeat to guarantee a play-off spot, but they were edged out 1-0 away to Italy, Sampdoria's Mattia Mustacchio scoring the only goal of the game.

Wales finished level on points with the Italians, but ended up second in the group based on results between the two teams. With Wales having won 2-1 at home earlier in the group, this 1-0 reverse meant Italy were higher placed on away goals - even though their overall goal difference was worse than the Welsh.

Hal Robson-Kanu and Simon Church both played the full game in Pescara, while Jake Taylor was an unused substitute.

Kanu looked lively and forced Arsenal keeper Vito Mannone into a good save an saw another effort blocked.

Elsewhere, Adam Federici was man of the match for Australia and saved a penalty as they won 2-1 in Poland. Zurab Khizanishvili played the full 90 minutes for Georgia as they drew 0-0 at home to Israel in a Euro 2012 qualifier, and he lined up in the centre of midfield, looking very comfortable in the position and tidy in possession.
