Federici saves penalty for Australia

Posted on: Wed 08 Sep 2010
Royals goalkeeper Adam Federici saved a penalty and put in an excellent display for Australia on Tuesday evening.

The 25-year-old registered a man of the match performance as his country earned a 2-1 friendly win over Poland at the Wisla Krakow Stadium.

Adam made a very good save to keep out a first half penalty from striker Robert Lewandowski, getting down low to his left hand side to keep out a drilled spot kick from the Borussia Dortmund frontman.

Federici made a series of excellent stops, keeping out a lively Polish side in an entertaining encounter.

Brett Holman opened the scoring for the visitors with a well-taken goal. Lewandowski then equalised with a neat flicked finish, giving Federici no chance.

Luke Wilkshere's spot kick then put Australia ahead; only for Lewandowski to miss from the spot soon after.

Australia's Brett Emerton was harshly sent off in the second half for a second bookable offence, and the Socceroos, hugely aided by Federici, managed to keep Franciszek Smuda's side at bay.

Elsewhere, Zurab Khizanishvili played 90 minutes in central midfield for Georgia as they drew 0-0 at home to Israel in a Euro 2012 qualifier. Shane Long was named as a substitute for Ireland as they beat Andorra 3-1 at the new Croke Park.

There was disappointment for Hal Robson-Kanu, Simon Church and Jake Taylor as Wales' u21s were knocked out of the UEFA u21 Championships by the very finest of margins; losing 1-0 to Italy and going out on away goals in a head-to-head record with the Italians, despite having a superior goal difference.
