Jobi McAnuff interview

Posted on: Thu 09 Sep 2010

Jobi McAnuff has been speaking about the transfer window, a clash with his former club and the battle for penalty duties! The full transcript of his interview can be read below.

Jobi we're up against one of your former teams this weekend, though we do seem to say that quite often!
Yes! Most teams in this league I seem to have some kind of history with. But it's always interesting playing against a former club and I'm sure I'll get a nice reception...

We can look forward to this game having not played for a couple of weeks, and of course after getting a good result at Leicester
It was massive for us to win the Leicester game, it lets you enjoy the break rather than go into it on a negative frame of mind and everyone's looking forward to the next game - hopefully we can kick on.

You popped up at right back against Leicester - it's becoming a bit of a habit!
I know! I thought I had a couple more years before I'd have to drop back there, but obviously we've had a bit of a defensive crisis and so it's just a matter of digging in and grinding the result out - which we did.

Andy Griffin said you were a bit like Cafu...

Well I take that as a compliment from him! It was fun and I actually quite enjoyed it so we'll see what happens.

It's nice now that the transfer window is shut and we have our squad settled. I know the manager said he was keen for the window to close and now we can focus on playing games?

Definitely. I don't see the sense in having a window open when the season has started, it seems silly to me - get it done at the end of July and then by the start of the season everyone knows where they are.

But there's obviously too much common sense in that idea for it to happen so we have to have the usual transfer wranglings, press and stuff like that going on. We obviously lost Gylfi which is a blow but from my perspective that's better than having to lose two of three to make up the money.

We take it in a positive frame of mind, we've added to the squad so on the whole it's not been too bad and we're looking to crack on.

We will miss Gylfi but he goes with our best wishes doesn't he?

Of course. I've seen it and most people in football have, sometimes you just get situations that are good for everybody and this is one of those.

It's a great figure for the club and for him to go and further his career in a league that's thriving at the moment is good for everybody so best wishes to him.

Zurab is obviously a player we know very well but how about Ian Harte, have you come up against him?
Yes a couple of times. He came into Watford a few years ago and I met him there, obviously he is a very good player and technically very good.

Zurab we know very well and everybody is pleased he's coming back. He's got a nice personality about him and he's a good natured guy. It's someone we'll be glad to have back around the training ground.

Finally - who's claiming the penalties and the free-kicks now?!
Well there was some unofficial penalty practising going on yesterday! So I think there's going to be a bit of a battle on for that one.

Brian Howard has kind of nominated himself, I need to get more goals so I'll definitely be in the running and obviously Longy will fancy himself too! We will have to have an official competition to see who gets it I think!
