Bromley 0
Reading 1 (Federici 70)
Incredibly, goalkeeper Adam Federici scored the only goal in the Royals' friendly win at Bromley.
The Australian shot stopper went outfield following a serious-looking ankle injury to Aaron Brown, who has been taken to hospital for an x-ray.
The Royals had used all three outfield subs at half time, then Brown was injured near the hour mark. Sub keeper Ben Hamer came on, with Federici going up front and scoring a well-taken goal 10 minutes later.
Overall it was a game of few chances, and Bromley gave a good account of themselves, hitting the bar in the first half.
Leroy Lita played the first 45 minutes, with other first teamers such as Chris Makin and John Halls also involved. With all subs used, assistant kit man Selby Armstrong played the last 10 minutes as Shane Long was given a rest.
Reading: Federici, Halls (Joseph-Dubois HT), Golbourne, Brown (Hamer 55), Makin (c) (Ujah HT), Cox, Osano, Davies, Hayes, Lita (Rendell HT), Long (Armstrong 80)
We'll have highlights on Reading World on Monday, as well as all the goals from the 9-1 win at Didcot.
Full report
With six minutes gone Lita almost put through his own net as he diverted a free kick towards Federici's goal, but the Australian saved. Soon afterwards Federici was again in action to palm a Bromley effort around his post.
With 20 minutes gone, Brown's loose touch allowed him to be tackled inside the Bromley half, and their left winger Kirk Watts sped forward with good pace. He continued unchallenged toward goal, running fully 60 yards, but his shot from 10 yards came back off the bar with Federici beaten.
For the next 20 minutes there was very little goalmouth action, with Reading giving the ball away a little more than they would have liked.
Towards the end of the half, Lita struck a good effort goalwards from 25 yards, and keeper Andy Walker got down well, and he also reacted to smother Scott Davies' follow-up.
Steve Coppell introduced all three outfield subs at half time, but with ten minutes of the half played he was forced into another change.
Brown made a good challenge to kick out a high ball on the half way line, but he landed badly on his right ankle. After lengthy treatment he was stretchered off, leaving Coppell to chat with referee Steve Bennett about his substitution options.
With only sub keeper Hamer left on the bench, the youngster came on for Brown, and keeper Federici went up front as part of some other positional changes.
He showed some good touches almost immediately, and won the ball back neatly inside his own area.
Soon though he really made a name for himself with a well-taken goal. Shane Long played the ball into the box, and Scott Rendell won it, forcing it to slip to Federici. The ball was a little under his feet, but he worked enough space to shoot goalwards. The keeper got a very slight touch, but could not keep it out and it nestled in the corner.
The goal gave the game a temporary boost, but both sides soon found it hard to create chances again.
After playing twice in two days, Long was given the last 10 minutes off, and kit man Armstrong was brought on as something of an unofficial sub.
Selby is a regular in Division One East of the Reading Sunday League, and despite a perhaps slightly bigger waistline than his teammates, he showed some good touches as the game drew to a close!
