Central defender who is very comfortable in possession and good in the air. Greatly impressed in the youth team and the reserves during the 1998/99 season and was rewarded with a call-up to Tommy Burns' first team squad.
He has continued to progress under Alan Pardew, and spent a brief period on loan with Maidenhead United to further his development early in 2000. Joined Conference side Forest Green Rovers on loan at the end of the 2000/1 season, helping them avoid relegation before playing in the FA Umbro Trophy final at Villa Park.
