Disappointment for Church

Posted on: Fri 22 Aug 2008

Simon Church was a late substitute for Wales' under 21s as they went down 1-0 to Romania on Wednesday.

Brian Flynn's young side knew that a win would put them in the qualifying play-offs for the summer UEFA u21 Championships, but they lost to a Adrian Ropotan goal.

Church came on in the 74th minute with the score at 1-0 but could not help their quest for an equaliser.

The youngsters must now go to Romania and get a result to have any chance of progressing.

Boss Flynn said, "The boys did enough to win the game and we did not take our chances.

"We have proved we can score goals prior to this game... it's a golden opportunity that has passed us by tonight.

"I have got some very talented, disappointed players in the dressing room."

"We have got another chance out in Romania which will be very difficult.

"Romania have only conceded one goal in the competition and are a difficult team to play against and they showed us that respect, and you have to take your chances at this level.

"The positive thing to take from the game is that we have shown Romania that we are capable of beating them.

"I would have worries if we were going to Romania with no chance, but we have."

Meanwhile, Gylfi Sigurdsson's Iceland u21s took on Denmark this week.
