Church nets in historic win

Posted on: Thu 18 Sep 2008

Simon Church scored for Wales' under 21s as they won 3-0 in Romania last night; sealing their spot in the play-offs for the 2009 UEFA Championships.

It was a magnificent result for Brian Flynn's youngsters, who had lost 1-0 at home to Romania last month and needed a win in Iasi to make it through to the play-offs.

This team are hoping become the first Welsh international side to qualify for a major finals since John Charles et al made the World Cup in Sweden way back in 1958.

Without Ched Evans, Sam Vokes, Gareth Bale and a host of other u21 regulars, the young Dragons more than stepped up to the plate and Middlesbrough defender Rhys Williams opened the scoring with 12 minutes gone.

Our 19-year-old striker Church, currently on loan at Wycombe for a month, then popped up from close range on 57 minutes to double the advantage.

Crystal Palace's Rhoys Williams notched another ten minutes later and it was job done for the youngsters.

Boss Flynn told the BBC ,"The lads were absolutely magnificent from start to finish. Wales will be proud of them, I'm sure of that, as I am tonight."

"Romania knew we would contest it from start to finish and that's what we did. In the last two games, we haven't scored, but there's goals in the team and I said to the lads if we scored we would win the game."

When looking ahead to the draw, which takes place on Friday, Flynn said, "There are some big teams ahead like Germany, Spain, England, Portugal and Croatia.

"They are top, top nations in Europe which we will be coming up against which is mouth-watering for us."
