Sigurdsson scores; Jem sits out

Posted on: Thu 18 Sep 2008

Royals midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson scored for Iceland's under 21s last night as they picked up a 1-1 home draw against their Slovakian counterparts.

Gylfi was celebrating his 19th birthday, and marked the occasion when he got on the end of Birkir Bkarnason's shot to make it 1-0 midway through the first half.

Slovakia got themselves back in the game when Chelsea's Miroslav Stoch scored a penalty; Iceland also having a man sent off for handball in the same incident.

It was Gylfi's second appearance for the u21s in the space of a few days, starting in a 1-0 defeat away to Austria.

Fellow Royal Jem Karacan was selected as part of Turkey's u21 squad for games with the Czech Republic then Armenia, but did not play because of a minor back problem. He should be fine for our game at Ipswich.

The Turks picked up two good results in Jem's absence, first winning 2-0 against the Czechs and then 4-0 against Armenia. They are through to the play-offs and could face Simon Church's Wales.

Iceland however are well out of the running.
