Church and Karacan in play-off heartache

Posted on: Mon 10 Nov 2008

Simon Church was on the scoresheet again as Wales under 21s drew 2-2 with England to suffer a heartbreaking 5-4 aggregate defeat in the European Championships play-offs.

The 19-year-old striker put his country 2-1 ahead during the first half at Villa Park, only for a Sam Vokes own goal to send England through.

Wales completely dominated the second hald and can consider themselves unfortunate to go out, but it was another eye-catching performance from the Reading youngster.

Simon had also shone in the first leg at Ninian Park last weekend, scoring both Wales goals in the 3-2 defeat that ultimately proved their undoing.

There was also play-off disappointment for midfielder Jem Karacan's Turkey, who were sent out by Belarus.

Jem missed the games with an injury sustained in the Royals' victory over Burnley, but he should be fit in time for Saturday's trip to Preston.
