Live updates
7:30pm - The game gets underway, 30 minutes later than originally scheduled as Preston's coach broke down on the way from their Marlow hotel down to Reading.

10mins - No goalmouth action as yet but both teams are trying to get it down and play.

15mins - Neither keeper tested yet. Reading trying to get a move going down the left, triallist left back Abayomi Seymour looking for a link-up with Irish youth international Gary Frewen outside him.

19mins - Preston's Ryan McGreevy has a goal disallowed from a wide free kick, nodding home Sam Hart's delivery. Looked a little tight but no complaints from North End. Then seconds later a great chance for their number 8 Adam Barton. Reading overplayed somewhat and Barton was in, but went round the keeper too wide, getting crowded out. From the resulting corner Simon Locke makes a brilliant save - the game has come alive now.

23mins - Another PNE free kick causes problems but it drifts wide of our goal in the end.

30mins - Reading look to capitalise on a free kick but Danny Joyce overhits the set piece. Preston's keeper is wearing black John Barnes-style tights. PNE quickly break but skipper Clovis Kamdjo defends well.

36mins - Glorious chance for Preston's Sam Hart but he heads over from two yards after great work down the right by his teammates. The visitors are on top.

39mins - Gary Frewen wins a free kick for Reading and curls it into the wall. It breaks to Frankie Raymond and he shoots over. Closest Eamonn Dolan's boys have come. Soon after another Joyce free kick is a little too far for Kamdjo right at the back post.

45mins - Two minutes are added....then the whistle blows. Not much to report so far, Preston the better side overall and they had a couple of good chances.

46mins - We're underway again. Welsh youth international Jake Taylor is on for Bulgarian youth international frontman Radoslav Vasilev. Taylor goes wide right, Walcott up front.

50mins - Couple of Preston corners but no real danger.

54mins - Good run from PNE's Danny Mayor but the resulting free kick is blocked. Our right back Danny Joyce is down for treatment and has to come off for Andrew White.

65mins - PNE inches from scoring. A low cross is drilled in and Neil Dougan looks to have an open goal but it's just too far ahead of him. A let-off for Reading.

67mins - Mayor does well for PNE and gets in a low cross that bounces around the box but thankfully edges wide. Soon after PNE bring on Jamie Proctor for Dougan.

71mins - Reading's best moment. Simon Cox hits a long pass for Jake Taylor, who cuts in from the right wing nicely. He dances past a couple of challenges but arrows a left-foot shot just wide - very good play from the sub.

72mins - GOAL FOR PNE. The influential Mayor goes on an incisive run and Reading don't close him down as he surges forward. Simon Locke saves his shot well, but it falls to McGreevy to tap home for 1-0.

73mins - Almost an immediate reprieve for Reading, and probably should have been. Andrew White does really well but Gary Frewen heads his cross wide - a big chance.

76mins - What a chance for Reading. John Goddard slips in Kelvin Bossman down the right, and his cross must surely be turned home by Clovis Kamdjo - but our skipper completely misses the ball with the goal gaping. Maybe Andrew White just got in his line of sight but what a chance. Abdulai Baggie is on for Goddard seconds later.

82mins - Reading pushing but to no avail. Owens on for Miller for PNE as they make a second change.

84mins - Bossman's shot is mishandled by the PNE keeper but goes just wide. Lucky for the Whites.

88mins - Kitchen sink time now as Reading throw it all forward looking for a vital goal.

90mins - Three minutes added. Preston standing firm.

FULL TIME - Preston take a deserved win. Reading came to life just as Preston scored but couldn't get that equaliser.

In the last two seasons we've gone out to the eventual winners and this is a huge disappointment for our youngsters who gave everything but came up short on the night against a resilient North End outfit.
