Watts hat-trick downs Forest

Posted on: Sat 03 Sep 2011

Reading FC Women made it two wins from two in their new campaign with an impressive 3-1 victory over Nottingham Forest.

A hat-trick from Nikki Watts, who also scored the winner in the opening day win over Coventry, sealed the points for the Royals - who blew their opponents away with a scintillating second half display.

An eventful first period somehow failed to yield a goal, as both sides struggled to deal with high winds - making defending a tough ask.

Reading 'keeper and Ireland international Grace Moloney pulled off a top class save with 20 minutes on the clock, before tipping over another long range effort ten minutes before the break.

However it was the Royals who had the chance to take the lead as Watts was felled in the box to win the first spot kick of the afternoon, but the striker saw her effort well saved by the Forest stopper.

Nikki clearly didn't let the miss affect her confidence, as just five minutes into the second half she latched onto a cross from Alice Palmer to tap home.

Forest got themselves back into the game by converting a penalty after a dubious refereeing decision on the hour mark, but Reading responded rapidly as Jasmine Brewster won a free-kick - allowing Watts to step up and bend a tremendous effort around the wall and into the top corner.

The forward then completed her hat-trick and grabbed all three points by racing onto a through ball and cool chipping the 'keeper from 18 yards.
