Connor's day out

Posted on: Fri 08 Apr 2011

In conjunction with our 'Level Playing Field' disability programme and the ongoing work our Community Trust is embarking upon in the local disabled community, earlier this month for the Reading vs Portsmouth game we welcomed a very special matchday mascot.

Connor Johnstone was born prematurely at 26 weeks, and as a result, lives with cerebral palsy and spastic quadriplegia.

But with Connor's determination and confidence he has made astonishing progress in the last 14 years of his life. He is now able to walk freely with the help of his special shoes, splints and body brace.

And he never lets his physical limitations stop him joining in with activities. In fact, at school he was recently the winner of 'Brookfields Got Talent', with an imitation of one of Michael Jackson's dance routines! And he has now taken three exams for the London Academy for Music & Dramatic Arts.

Our Community Trust Disability Officer Phil Griffiths, said "I have worked with Connor within Brookfields school for the past six years. Connor has made huge strides since - he required a frame and had low mobility when I first met him, now he is able to walk unaided and participates in the football sessions every week. He always has a great attitude and never lets his condition stand in his way."

The full video Connor's day is available on Reading Player now.
