After a successful run in the youth and reserve team, he broke through to the first team taking hold of left-back duties. His run of games within the first team lasted over two seasons, making 59 league starts for the Seagulls and scoring just the one goal – an 82nd winner against Rotherham in 2004. After moving to Leeds for a season, Harding joined Ipswich’s ranks in a part-exchange deal with Ian Westlake in 2006. It was while holding a contract with the Tractor Boys that the former England U21s international was drafted in on loan by Steve Coppell in January 2009 as defensive cover during the second half of a push for immediate promotion back to the Premier League. He made his Madejski Stadium debut in a winner takes all end of season clash with Birmingham City in May 2009. His second and final home start came in the play-off semi-final second leg loss to Burnley before signing permanently for Southampton that summer. In 2009 he became the Saints first signing under former Reading manager Allan Pardew. He scored his first goal in a 1-1 draw with Brentford, five games into his time at Southampton. He remained a regular in the side for three seasons before seeing a move to Nottingham Forest in July 2012. He was a rotation player within the Forest side and was recently loaned out to Millwall midway through the 2014/15 season.
