The Royals announced the signing of Ireland international defender Paul McShane in July 2015 bringing great experience and quality to Madejski Stadium.

With the majority of his career spent in the Premier League, playing for West Bromwich Albion, Sunderland and Hull, Paul has a great pedigree in the game, having initially come through the youth system at Manchester United, winning the FA Youth Cup there in 2003.

In 2007 West Bromwich Albion sold McShane to the Black Cats for a fee in the region of £2.5million. 2008 saw the beginning of the Irishman’s long and successful spell with Hull, the majority of which was in the Premier League making over 100 appearances for the Tigers. In 2013 he scored on the final day of the season as Hull secured a second promotion.

Paul was also part of the Hull side that had a successful FA Cup run in 2013/14 coming on as a substitute in the final as the Tigers narrowly lost against Arsenal.

McShane also has a wealth of international experience having made 33 appearances for the Republic of Ireland at senior level.

By the end of 2015/16 he has become a mainstay in the Royals back-four, making 40 appearances across the league and cups having been handed the captain’s armband from the start of the season.
