Republic of Ireland

Starting his footballing career in Berkshire, Kelly graduated from our Academy after joining up at the age of 16. He played for the reserve outfit for most of the 2007/08 season appearing 27 times at left-back.

The following year saw the London-born defender break into our first team, having located a place on the subs bench for the opening league game of the season, Kelly made his debut in blue and white hoops two days later in a Carling Cup fixture against Dagenham & Redbridge.

Ten more appearances unfolded that season prior to loan spells with Wycombe Wanderers and Lincoln Town throughout the following two campaigns.

He scored his first professional goal whilst on loan with the Chairboys, in his unveiling, Kelly netted the winner against Millwall and went on to go unbeaten in seven out of the nine games he played for them.

His last appearances as a Royal came at the start of the 2010/11 season, before embarking on loan to Lincoln, he stepped out for the last time at Madejski Stadium against Northampton Town, playing 50 minutes before making way for Academy debutant Jake Taylor.

After leaving Reading, Kelly chose to sign for League One side Notts County on a two-year deal, scoring his first goal for the club in his fourth appearance – a 52nd minute volley against Tranmere Rovers.

After completing two seasons with the Magpies, our Academy graduate had notched up 56(+5) appearances and scored four goals.

In September 2013, once having trials with Grimsby Town, Kelly decided to take a year’s break from the game before lacing his boots back up to play for Northern Premier League Division One side Spalding United, aged 25.
