David Mooney

Date of birth

Republic of Ireland

When Irish frontman Dave Mooney was lured away from Cork City in the summer of 2008, Reading fans hoped for a second coming.

Shane Long and Kevin Doyle had been plucked from relative Emerald Isle obscurity and become Madejski Stadium legends and international mainstays for their country.

Mooney had been named ‘Player of the Year’ at City only the previous year, finishing as the league's top scorer in 2007 and topping the charts when he crossed the Irish Sea to become a Royal half-way through the League of Ireland’s season.

But Noel Hunt’s former Shamrock Rovers teammate found it difficult to break into a first team still boasting the likes of Long, Doyle and Simon Church, so largely spent his first couple of seasons on loan with Stockport County, Norwich and Charlton – whom he scored for in the League One play-off semi-final the following season.

His first of two Madejski Stadium appearances brought a brace – he scored twice in a league cup thrashing of Burton Albion in 2009/10 but soon departed on loan once more – to Colchester United before moving on a free transfer to Leyton Orient in 2011.

Mooney was joined by former Reading captain Jobi McAnuff in July 2014, a regular in the side he ended the 2014/15 League One season with a goal tally of nine as unfortunately for Mooney, Orient were relegated back down to League Two.
