Joseph Mendes

Date of birth

Found honing his talents in Ligue 2 with Le Havre, Joseph Mendes joined the Royals on a two-year deal in July 2016.

Starting his footballing career with Grenoble, Mendes went on to have spells with SAS Epinal, Le Mans and Lokomotiv Plovdiv in Bulgaria before joining Le Havre in 2014/15 where he developed an eye for goal.

The forward scored nine goals in 24 league starts for Le Havre during 2015/16 including four in the last three league games of the campaign.

Standing at 6’1” tall, Mendes helped the Normandy-based side to a fourth-placed finish, ahead of the likes of Lens and Auxerre, but narrowly missing out on promotion to the top tier on goals scored as Metz clung on to the last Ligue 1 place, despite Mendes scoring in a 5-0 final day win for Bob Bradley’s men.

The striker chose to join Jaap Stam’s Reading outfit at the start of the new EFL Sky Bet Championship season and tasted first team football for the initial time with the Royals during a pre-season tour of Oosterbeek in Holland.

A string of niggling injuries frustrated the frontman throughout the season, but he scored his first goal for the club in a memorable 3-1 win at Villa Park. In fact, he notched a brace in our first ever win at Villa - rifling low into the bottom left corner to hand Stam's side an early lead, before connecting with Lewis Grabban's low cross and converting from close range at the start of the second half.

However, injury unfortunately plagued the second year of Mendes' time at Reading, and he left the club upon the expiration of his contract in 2018.
