Marek Matejovsky

At the age of five, Matejovsky started his youth career with a number of different Czech clubs. With a lot of them difficult to pronounce, the easiest and most prominent was the latter, Mladá Boleslav who he played for in the Czech 2. Liga.

In the 2004/05 season, he helped the club to win promotion back to the Czech First League and was named captain of the side for the following campaign.    

Linked with moves to Liverpool, Hamburg and Steaua Bucharest, Matejovsky instead chose to join Reading, and in January 2008 he signed a three-year deal with the club.

The Czech scored his first goal for the Royals in the opening five minutes of the game against Liverpool at Anfield in March.

That speculative 20-yard strike was one of only two goals he scored in his time in Berkshire, the other being against Birmingham in the Championship the following year.

39(+17) was the midfielder’s record in hoops before his departure in the summer months of 2010, returning to the Czech Republic he joined Sparta Prague for a £650,000 fee.

From the 2011/12 season onwards, it was announce that he would be given charge of the captaincy at the Generali Arena, and in 2014 they finished campaign year as Champions, Matejovsky aged 32.
