Reading’s Under-18s rounded off their 2017/18 campaign with a 2-1 win against visiting Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday.
Another competitive campaign came to an end for David Dodds’ youngsters – a number of the squad this year playing from younger age-groups.
The U18s rushed into a two-goal lead before the break; Shamar Moore broke the deadlock with a fine volley midway through the first period, before Khalid Simmo’s delightful strike doubled the advantage just ahead of the break.
The Seagulls got back within a goal before the hour as Jack Spong grabbed one back, but the Royals retained their slender advantage until the final whistle.
Under-18 manager David Dodds said: “It was nice to end the season with a win – and we needed to put in a good performance because Brighton have a lot of quality.
“We came out really quickly and had some really good chances to go one up in the first few minutes, but we couldn’t quite get the ball in the net. But we did go ahead eventually with a really nice goal – it was great work down the right by Joe Wilson on the overlap, and then a really well-taken volley by Shamar Moore.
“And then just before the break Khalid Simmo cut in off the flank and curled on in from distance – another great goal! So we were in a good position at half-time.
“We created some opportunities to kill the game off but we weren’t able to take them. We knew they would be dangerous on the counter, and eventually they took one of their opportunities which made it a bit nervous for us.
“But the boys dug in well and kept doing the right things and they got a win, which is a nice way to end the season.
“All in all, it has been another pleasing season – a majority of the Under-18 squad have played up with the Under-23s, and there has been plenty of progress. There’s still lots of learning to be done but we have made good progress.”
