Reading U18s put in a battling performance at Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday, only to concede in the dying moments and draw 2-2 with the Seagulls.
The Royals overturned a half-time deficit to lead going into stoppage time, before a 95th minute equaliser by Alex Cochrane ensured the spoils were shared.
Our youngsters drew level early on in the second half through a superb free-kick from Jack Nolan, after Jayden Onen had put the Seagulls ahead after 15 minutes.
The Royals missed a golden chance to go ahead when the game was level, failing to convert a penalty moments after equalising.
That was soon put to bed, though, as Khalid Simmo struck midway through the second period to give the young Royals the lead.
The Seagulls equalised late on from a goalmouth scramble, but one positive was a debut at U18 level for U16 player Michael Olise, who impressed while playing the whole 90 minutes.
U18 manager, David Dodds, summarised the feedback from his coaching team at the game and gave a take on the Royals' performance: "In the first half we were a little bit rusty, the team was put together as a little bit flexible.
"We had to rearrange the midfield and back line, understandably the first half was a little bit disjointed. The coaches organised for the second half, Jack Nolan scored a good free-kick to equalise.
"Khalid Simmo scored to put us 2-1 up, we missed a penalty at 1-1 and with the last kick of the game almost they managed to put the bits in from a goalmouth scramble.
"It was a really good experience for the lads who don't usually play, and young Michael Olise made his debut and did well, so that was a bonus as well.
"It was a game of two halves, in the second half we were on the front foot and we were disappointed in the end to draw rather than win the game."
Next up for our U18s is a Fifth Round tie of the FA Youth Cup, away at Colchester United, with a place in the quarter-finals at stake!
