U23s back at Madejski Stadium this Saturday!

Royals set to take on Sunderland

23 August 2018

Our Under-23s are back in RG2 this weekend for some more Premier League 2 action and another opportunity to pick up three points!

It’s a 1pm kick-off on Saturday 25th August against Sunderland – a chance for you to support the future stars of Reading at Madejski Stadium.

Once again, Season Ticket holders can attend for absolutely FREE – and parking is also free and unreserved for all fans too.  Supporters without Season Tickets can also attend by paying on the turnstiles at the price of £3 for Adults and £1 for ages 65 & Over and 24 & Under.

Scott Marshall’s side have been involved in three highly-entertaining encounters so far this season, and have a win, a draw and a loss from their outings.

Our boys’ first fixture of the league campaign ended in a 2-2 draw at Madejski Stadium against Wolves – a couple of cracking strikes by Danny Loader and Tyler Frost ensured Reading got off the mark on the first day.

Then they faced Leicester City in the group stage of the Premier League International Cup and won 2-0 in the Midlands; Ethan Coleman and Ben House found the net as they got off to a great start, with games against Sparta Prague and Feyenoord still to come.

And most recently, back in Premier League 2, Loader struck twice as the U23s visited Norwich on Monday, only for the Canaries to turn things around and eventually win 3-2.

Sunderland, meanwhile, haven’t had the best beginning to the campaign.  Overturned 2-1 after leading to Stoke in their opening fixture, and then crushed 5-0 by rivals Newcastle when they went to Tyneside on Monday.

If you aren’t headed to Villa Park to see the first team in action this weekend, you can drop in to Madejski Stadium and lend your support – and hopefully see the Royals take three points!

Gunter and Popa continue comeback in U23s win

First-team duo star as Black Cats downed

27 August 2018

A senior international duo in the form of Chris Gunter and Adrian Popa both played a role in our Under-23 side’s 4-1 win against Sunderland on Saturday in Premier League 2.

Welshman Gunter, involved in his first game since our pre-season friendly against Crystal Palace, played the first 45 minutes for the Royals – when he was replaced by fellow first-team player Omar Richards.

Meanwhile Romanian winger Popa, who is working his way back to match fitness and recently faced Birmingham in the Carabao Cup, played the first hour of the fixture.

The game was only nine minutes old when the first goal went in – Josh Barrett was the one to open the scoring, with Ben House providing the assist.

And before the 20-minute mark, the lead was doubled through captain Gabriel Osho – he netted from the spot after Danny Loader drew a foul in the Black Cats’ box.

Soon after the hour-mark, House added his name to the scoresheet as the Royals’ lead was further extended.

Luke Molyneux pegged one back for the visitors with 20 minutes remaining, but it wasn’t enough to put any real pressure on the Royals’ hopes of getting the right result – our first PL2 win of the new campaign.

And indeed it was Reading who finalised the scoring – centre-half Osho notched his second and our fourth in added time to put some gloss on the win.
