RG2 hosts table-topping clash for U23s!

Red Devils welcomed for PL2 encounter this Sunday

14 December 2018

It's our Academy Christmas Extravaganza this weekend, and there's plenty happening on the pitch as well as off it at Madejski Stad

U23 | “It’s always a big game when you play United!”

13 December 2018

Reading U23 vs Manchester United U23
Madejski Stadium
Premier League 2, Division 2
Sunday 16th December
1pm kick-off

With Scott Marshall set to lead the first team at Rotherham this weekend, David Dodds will be in charge as the Royals' Under-23s welcome Manchester United to RG2 on Sunday lunchtime.

The Royals were knocked off top spot in the league after their 14-match unbeaten run in all competitions came to an end last weekend at West Bromwich Albion. They remain behind Wolves on goal difference, though, with Manchester United lurking just two points behind in third place as the table stands.

This will be the youngsters' penultimate match before their winter break, with Feyenoord laying in wait in the Premier League International Cup on Wednesday night - and our boys will qualify from their group with victory!

Royals deliver festive cheer to children’s ward at Royal Berkshire Hospital!

12 December 2018

But Sunday is the perfect opportunity for our supporters to see the next generation of Royals take to the turf at Madejski Stadium, with Danny Loader, Andy Rinomhota and Tom McIntyre all making the step up to the first team squad so far this season.

Reading are the top scorers in their division, too, and while the competition is set to be fierce on the pitch - there's plenty going on around Madejski Stadium to celebrate Christmas with our Academy!

Entry to the game is FREE to all Season Ticket Holders and just £3 for Adults and £1 for Concessions on the day of the game. So we want as many Royals fans in the Lower West Stand at Madejski Stadium to see what the next generation of first team footballers have to offer!

Sunday is being billed as our Academy Christmas Extravaganza and two hours before our Under-23s kick off against United, all our other Academy age groups and their families are set to take part in a very special Santa Run!

Our Academy age groups will all don blue Santa hats for a 5K run around Madejski Stadium and Green Park which will start and end outside the South Stand - and every runner will be paying a £5 entry fee and raising sponsorship funds for two very worthwhile causes!

Half of the money raised will go towards Action Bladder Cancer UK, a charity chosen on behalf of the late Eamonn Dolan and his family. The other half of the funds raised will be given directly to the Reading FC Community Trust’s disability programme - members of our Deaf Team, some of the club’s Primary Stars staff and a number of students from a local SEN school who work with our Trust coaches on a regular basis will all be taking part in the Santa Run, ho, ho ho-ing their way around the circuit.

This year, however, we are unable to open up the run to supporters. However, we hope that this might be the start of a regular much bigger event which can effectively bring the club together at Christmas and engage supporters and the local community.

Festive festivities

Post-Santa Run, there will be plenty of festive fun for all the family to enjoy. All the runners will be able to enjoy refreshments and mince pies in the Princess Suite and some of our first team’s Academy stars will be on site to meet and greet players, supporters and their families.

Mr Claus himself is set to make an appearance with his grotto in the Windsor Suite, where there will be an opportunity to get your face painted and both write and post a letter to Lapland in time for the wish list to get to him before the big day!

Make sure you're here to back the boys this weekend on the pitch, and enjoy yourselves with a fun day in store around Madejski Stadium!

U23s pay the penalty against United

Angel Gomes with the game’s only goal

16 December 2018

Reading’s Under-23s were narrowly defeated by Manchester United at Madejski Stadium on Sunday, as Angel Gomes’ penalty midway through the second half was enough to separate the teams.

On a bitterly cold afternoon, a game of few chances was decided from the spot as the Red Devils’ forward – who has two appearances for the senior team – tucked away from 12 yards.

It was a result that sent the visitors top of the Premier League 2 Division 2, leapfrogging the Royals to put them top of a concertinaed pack.

David Dodds, deputising for Scott Marshall, named several players well underneath the Under-23 threshold; Oliver Pendlebury manned the midfield at just 16 years of age, while 15-year-old goalkeeper Coniah Boyce-Clarke was handed his first Premier League 2 start.

And the young stopper showed his agility early on when Dutch Under-21 international Tahith Chong skipped in off the right and fizzed a left-footed effort on target – the young stopper palmed away strongly.

Adrian Popa and Josh Barrett each had opportunities of similar ilk to open the scoring for the Royals, receiving crosses from the right on the far side, but Popa’s was wild and Barrett’s forced a strong stop from Matej Kovar.

Between those chances, Callum Harriott fizzed one goalwards from the right byline but the angle was against him and tipped around the post.

And then the goalkeeper made a stunning stop to deny Ben House his 11th goal of the season – he stole a march to meet Jamal Balogun’s cross, but the goalkeeper was tipped onto the crossbar.

Instead it was United, who had offered little going forward throughout, who took the lead midway through the second period.  Substitute Nishan Burkart burst into the area and looked to have been edged out by centre-half Andre Burley, but the referee deemed it worthy of a penalty.  Up stepped Gomes, and his firm strike was just past the fingertips of Boyce-Clarke for an opener.

Reading pushed to get level but Popa’s effort was wild as he cut off the left flank, and then sub Ramarni Medford-Smith was wayard with his header as the ball came in from the left.

Ultimately a bit of a frustrating day for the Royals as the game ended narrowly in United’s favour.
