The next generation of Royals are in action as our Under-23s take on Southampton on Saturday lunchtime (1pm kick-off).

Scott Marshall's side have started the season in fine form, losing just once in their opening seven matches in all competitions so far.

Following an entertaining draw against Wolves and an emphatic victory over Sunderland at Madejski Stadium for our U23s this season, Premier League 2 fixtures involving our youngsters have often been filled with drama and exciting football!

They go into this match against the Saints off the back of two hard-fought draws - against Manchester United and West Bromwich Albion - with a number of young Royals hoping to impress in RG2 this weekend.

Southampton were the early pace-setters in the Premier League 2 Division 2, but a narrow defeat last time out against Aston Villa saw them drop to 4th in the table - with the Royals able to leapfrog their opponents with victory on Saturday.

Madejski Stadium will once again be open to spectators who want to see the youngsters in action, with free entry upon the presentation of your Season Ticket!

For any non-Season Ticket holders, entry costs just £3 for Adults and £1 for Concessions (65 & Over, 24 & Under), with free parking available at Madejski Stadium for this match.

The West Stand will be open for entry via Gate 4, through cash-only turnstiles. Refreshments will also be available on the West Stand concourse on the day.

It's another fantastic opportunity to get to know the potential first team players of tomorrow, all the while supporting the Royals!

U23s see off Saints to go third

Loader and House net against Southampton

1 October 2018

Second-half goals by Danny Loader and Ben House helped the Royals Under-23 side to a 2-0 win over Southampton on Saturday afternoon at Madejski Stadium.

Three more points on the board for Scott Marshall’s side helped push our outfit up to third in the Premier League 2 Division 2 standings, leapfrogging the Saints on the way.

The Saints’ woodwork was rattled as early as the third minute of the match, as Tyler Frost’s wicked delivery from the right flank was diverted against the bar by the head of House and crashed to safety.  Loader’s follow-up fell kindly for goalkeeper Jack Rose.

Southampton striker Michael Obafemi wasn’t able to capitalise on a loose back-pass midway through the first period, snatching his shot high and wide as he tried to beat Liam Driscoll with an early attempt.

Rose made a fine double-save on the half-hour, firstly denying Reading captain Ryan East as a long-range effort picked a gap in a crowded area, and then getting down low to prevent Loader converting a rebound.

Reading finally made the breakthrough midway through the second period, as Garath McCleary, who played 87 minutes of the match, strode forward and laid in Loader… the forward took one deft touch to make space, and a second touch to slot low into the corner.

And the result was wrapped up ten minutes from time when Ramarni Medford-Smith linked up with Callum Harriott down the left and delivered a pinpoint low cross for House to tuck in from six yards as he arrived unmarked.
