Preview | Back to Adams Park for U23s on Friday

Youngsters hosting West Brom

20 September 2018

Reading’s Under-23s will be aiming to keep pushing up the Premier League 2 Division 2 table on Friday evening as they face their West Bromwich Albion visitors at Adams Park (kick-off 7pm).

Scott Marshall’s charges – with the inclusion of Andy Rinomhota, Pelle Clement and Garath McCleary – overturned a two-goal deficit to win a friendly fixture with Brentford B in midweek.

Coupled with a draw last Friday against Manchester United in the league, as well as wins against North East pair Sunderland and Newcastle, there’s plenty of confidence to be taken into this fixture!

On the other hand, the Baggies currently sit rock-bottom of the table after five games – just one draw amassed in that time, as well as four losses, and a -9 goal-difference.

With first-teamers still feeling their way into action as they return from injury, there could potentially be some more minutes for some over-age players under the floodlights in Wycombe.

It’s the first of back-to-back home league fixtures for our U23s.  The second follows on Saturday 29th September as we host Southampton at Madejski Stadium.

Entry is £3 Adults and £1 Concessions and should be paid on arrival at Adams Park.  If you’re free and fancy checking out some floodlit football, head down and get behind our youngsters!

Report | Reading U23s held at Adams Park

Royals U23s forced to share the spoils against experienced West Brom side...

21 September 2018

Readings U23s were forced to share the spoils at Adams Park against an experienced West Bromwich Albion side in Premier League 2 Division

  • Fast start off the blocks from the Royals
  • Strong defending from West Brom keeps the Reading attack at bay
  • Three big stops from Alex Palmer in the second half forces Royals to settle for a point

A strong start from the Royals allowed them to pressure their opponents from the beginning. Both Danny Loader and Callum Harriott looked especially lively, and had a number of long-range chances in the opening minutes.

On seven minutes, it should have been 1-0 to the Royals after Ben House broke through the Albion defence and struck the outside of the post from inside the area.

Reading retained the majority of the possession thereafter, but West Brom made the Royals patiently wait as they defended their box stubbornly.

After a period of exchange, the visitors grew into the game and a golden opportunity fell the way of Oliver Burke. From the edge of the box, the former Forest and RB Leipzig man unleashed a venomous effort, but he could only rattle the crossbar.

Less than a minute from half-time, good work going forward from Loader saw the ball played out wide to Teddy Howe. He cut inside well and found space for a shot, but Alex Palmer did just enough to tip it round the post.

HALF TIME | Reading 0-0 West Bromwich Albion

As play resumed, so did the quick tempo of the game. Both sides pressed to break the deadlock, but neither were able to carve out a real moment of quality.

With 53 minutes on the clock, Reading came closest to doing so after Harriott whipped a dangerous ball into the box for Josh Barrett to drive home. Another superb save from Palmer, though, kept the score goalless.

Next to try for the Royals was House, after he was found by another strong cross from Harriott. Palmer, though, refused to be beaten – getting his fingertips to a low-driven shot.

Less than two minutes later, House was knocking on the door again. A quick-footed weave into the box left him clean through on-goal, but he couldn’t find his footing and the ball was blasted into the side-netting.

After that, chances for both sides were hard to come by. In the game’s final minutes it became a war of tactics and neither were able to find the game-winning moment.
