📝 Match Report | U23s coast to comfortable win over Aston Villa

Young Royals produce impressive performance to see off Villains

29 January 2021

Reading U23s produced a clinical finishing display to beat Aston Villa U23s 3-1 at Bearwood Park, as they registered back-to-back victories in the Premier League 2 for the first time since this season.

Goals from the returning Thierry Nevers and Femi Azeez and a penalty from Ryan East proved enough to see the young Royals to three valuable points.

The affair began in a tightly contested fashion, with the game's first real chance falling to Reading, as Tyrell Ashcroft broke down the right handside before delivering a delightful cross to Mamadi Camara who headed just over after 10 minutes.

The Royals were unlucky not to be awarded a penalty at the half-hour mark, as a lively Nevers was brought down inside the area only to see his appeals for a spot kick waved away.

The deadlock was eventually broken after 43 minutes, as on the counter Conor Lawless found space to run into on the right, before delivering a low driven cross to Nevers who fired home unmarked inside the area on his return from injury.

Half-time: Reading U23 1-0 Aston Villa U23

Lawless then had a chance to double his side's lead just after the restart as he raced onto a long ball over the top, but his attempted lob was too high to trouble Akos Onodi in the Villa goal.

Mehmet Ali's side's continued pressure eventually paid dividends as the Royals added a second on 66 minutes, half-time substitute Femi Azeez made the most of a loose ball amongst the Villa backline to slot home.

Villa did pull one back five minutes to half the deficit, as Arjan Raikhy weaved himself some space from 10 yards, before slotting slow beyond Royals stopper Boyce-Clarke.

It wasn't long before Reading regained control of proceedings though as they were awarded a chance to extend their lead from the spot. A poor challenge in the box that saw Villa second-half substitute Mungo Bridge dismissed with a straight red.

Up stepped U23s captain Ryan East who powered confidently beyond Onodi to seal the three points and cap a successful team performance from Ali's youngsters.
