📝 Match Report | Reading U23 recapture form in Magpies win

Nevers and Azeez strike to propel young Royals to victory over Newcastle

1 March 2021

Reading U23s put back-to-back defeats behind them as they returned to form with three points and a 2-1 win over Newcastle United U23s at the Little Benton Academy.

First-half goals from forwards Thierry Nevers and Femi Azeez proved enough to see Mehmet Ali's side edge past the Magpies in the North East as they climbed to fifth in the Premier League 2 table.

The Young Royals needed just 13 minutes to break the deadlock on Tyneside, as Nevers converted from a free-kick to open the scoring.

Eleven minutes later, Ali's visitors doubled their advantage through a clever Femi Azeez finish that came about after good work from Mamadi Camara.

Newcastle almost fashioned an immediate response to going two down, but James Holden was on hand to deny Joe White, who's powerful effort from range was pushed behind by the Royals keeper.

Two minutes prior to the break, the Royals were left unlucky not to be three up at the interval, as Newcastle had keeper Will Brown to thank for tipping Nevers' close range header onto the crossbar before it was cleared from danger.

The hosts began to mount a comeback after the restart, and pulled one back after 52 minutes through midfielder Stan Flaherty, a through ball towards Dylan Stephenson came loose and found Flaherty, who tucked home to half the deficit.

Flaherty almost earnt United a point three minutes into stoppage time but having darted into the area, he found the side netting of Holden's goal.

Having come out on top in a topsy-turvy game that had eight bookings and eight minutes of stoppages, Ali's youngsters have four days to rest and recover, before Norwich City U23 visit Bearwood Park on Friday 5th March (1pm).
