Our Under-23 side registered a 3-2 win over visiting Newcastle United on Friday in Premier League 2.
A Ryan East penalty and goals apiece for Jayden Onen and Nahum Melvin-Lambert got the Royals the points come the final whistle at Bearwood Park.
But it was the Magpies who opened the scoring when Scotland Under-19 international Elliot Anderson fired hard and low to beat Coniah Boyce-Clarke before the 20-minute mark.
The Royals reacted well though and led before the break – firstly as East made no mistake from the penalty spot, adding to his recent goal against Leeds United on home turf, and Onen fired in just before half time, making it consecutive goalscoring games for the youngster.
A second yellow card for Nelson Abbey, less than ten minutes after the restart, meant that the Royals would have to finish the game a man light.
However Melvin-Lambert continued his good goalscoring form with his fourth goal from across the Under-18 and Under-23 age-groups with what would prove to be the game-sealer with 12 minutes remaining.
Reading were made to sweat for it when defender Brad Cross grabbed one back from close range with two minutes remaining, but a Newcastle trialist got sent off moments later for two cautions to make it 10 v 10 for the final few moments.
And the Royals saw out the win to go above their visitors in the league standings.
