Women climb table with Brighton victory

4-1 victory in Sussex takes Kelly Chambers' side up to fifth in the Women's Super League...

19 November 2018

After a two-week International break, Reading FC Women were back in FA WSL action at Brighton & Hove Albion and clinched a comfortable victory to continue just as they left off before the interval - with three points!

After a slow, scrappy opening period, Rachel Furness tried her luck from distance before Jade Moore and Brooke Chaplen both forced Brighton goalkeeper Marie Hourihan into routine stops.

Reading opened the scoring 20 minutes in through the help of Hourihan! Furness dinked a cute ball into Fara Williams who volleyed towards goal. It struck the post before hitting the back of Hourihan and trickling into the corner of the Brighton goal.

Brighton's captain Danni Buet received a yellow card for a foul on Lauren Bruton, who was forced off through injury less than half an hour into the game. But the Royals came close to adding to their advantage before the break; Hourihan had to be alert as she tipped Williams' strike over the bar, Williams herself struck again but just wide from 25 yards, then Jo Potter also hit the outside of the near post in injury time.

Reading doubled their lead just before the hour mark as Chaplen latched onto a perfectly weighted through ball by Furness and dispatched confidently into the far top corner.

The hosts' response was imminent as they halved the deficit two minutes later. Ini Umotang's cross was headed in at the near post by Aileen Whelan.

But the Royals restored their two-goal cushion shortly after through Williams; a shot from almost 30 yards was palmed into the air by Hourihan before coming down and bouncing over the line.

The game was effectively put to bed with nine minutes remaining as Gemma Davison's strike deceived Hourihan and found the back of the net.

"It was important that we built on our result and performance against Bristol City. But, in the first half we were a little bit slow out of the blocks," admitted manager Kelly Chambers.

"The girls were magnificent today - we've come away with the points but also some more goals on the board."

Full-back Maz Pacheco, added "We've been working hard, and that showed in today's game. It's credit to the girls and credit to the staff.

"We kept at it; they did frustrate us first half but it's a case of keeping our heads and playing how we want to play. We trusted our ability. Our belief is there, we believe in each other."
