In-form Arsenal held nothing back at Meadow Park on Saturday as they cemented their place at the top of the FA Women’s Super League with a 6-0 win over Reading.
The Gunners – who had won each of their four previous league games to date, including a 5-0 wins against both Chelsea and Liverpool – were again in full flow and ran riot in the capital.
Indeed, the deadlock lasted less than three minutes. Vivianne Miedema was first on the scoresheet, rising to meet a right-flank cross to head the home side into a lead.
And five minutes later, Jordan Nobbs had the hosts two ahead when a loose ball broke to her in the box, and the Gunners’ skipper slotted in calmly.
Despite the early setback, the Royals rallied and nearly clawed one back. Gemma Davison threaded a pass to former Arsenal midfielder Fara Williams, but goalkeeper Pauline Payraud-Magnin made a low stop.
Instead, the third goal of the game went the way of Arsenal, as Beth Mead picked her spot and curled into the far corner.
The fourth followed after the interval when Katie McCabe picked out Miedema in the middle to convert her second; her hat-trick almost came immediately afterwards when Nobbs rounded goalie Grace Moloney and squared for Miedema to convert, only to be denied on the line by some brave defending.
But Danielle van de Donk broke the offside trap to break away and tuck in Arsenal’s fifth, before Miedema completed her hat-trick when Van de Donk turned provider by slotting a ball into the path of the striker, who coolly converted. 6-0 the final score on a tough afternoon for the Royals.
