An entertaining affair ended without either net bulging as Reading FC Women and their West Ham hosts played out a 0-0 draw at Rush Green.
None went closer than Alisha Lehmann, whose fierce effort struck the woodwork in the first half for the Hammers – Grace Moloney beaten, but the post denying the Hammers a first goal since their elevation to the FA WSL.
West Ham stopper Becky Spencer had a busy evening – a first-half effort from close range by Lauren Bruton needed keeping out with an outstretched leg.
Brooke Chaplen tested Spencer after the break as a low free-kick threatened to beat the goalie at the near post, but she adjusted well.
Gemma Davison was the latest to go close for Reading, but could only fire into the side netting as the goalie covered her angles.
And while Reading were pressing for what could have been a winner, Moloney had to be alert when the Hammers threatened; Hammers skipper Brooke Hendrix flicked a Gilly Flaherty free-kick goalwards, but was thwarted by the Irish stopper.
Becky Jane, on as a late sub, almost snatched the points in the 89th minute for Reading but could only steer her header wide.
In the end, a lively encounter saw each team take a point. And it’s back to Adams Park this Sunday for the Royals when they host Birmingham City Ladies at 2pm in more league action.
